The 1.8 prerelease is just buggy as hell.

It's a bit like how people don't understand what 'beta' means.

I'm aware what a pre-release is. The thing is, you have to be a complete mental invalid of a programmer to break something that's been working for a year now, especially considering 1.8 isn't meant to change how furnaces work to my knowledge.

Or does Mojang make every build from scratch rather than just adding onto existing, working code?

edit: what I was getting at, maybe my system (which needs several work arounds just to get minecraft barely running) can't handle the new lighting system. That's all I was saying. I'm pretty sure furnaces give off light (probably red/orange) when burning something.

You would be surprised how easy it is to break something old by adding something new.

If you don't believe me, try programming something complex, then coming back to it later.

Of course it's easy to break something if you change something you haven't touched in awhile and don't remember how it works, but to my knowledge, nothing has changed about the furnaces, the fuels that go into them or the items that can be made with it, aside from the new chicken and beef items. Even then, adding new items to a list of items cookable with the furnace doesn't break it.

For what it's worth, it is the lighting system that's fucking with my client. Placing a torch, starting up a furnace or having the sun start to set just flat out crashes me out, so I'm betting it's graphics card related problems. 1.8 will be unplayable for me until someone makes a mod to remake the old light system unless Notch or Jeb implements some changes are made to it *over the weekend on personal time* (hint: not gonna happen).

Those abandoned mineshafts are excellent nightmare fuel. Especially when you consider they generate dynamically as you walk through them.

I'd honestly prefer and think it would work better if the endermen were down there.

Still, looks pretty sweet.

Cows also have proper udders.

You know, I'd be considering making my own RP server with all this new stuff that's been/being added if I had the ability to make servers. Unfortunately, I can't make my own server because I can't access my router's port settings without my grandfather's account username and password (which he doesn't have), and even if I did have those, my laptop would totally not cut the mustard for a server.

I tried creating a server, but holy... bandwidth usage. Although, now our cap has been greatly increased. I wonder if I can convince my dad again...

The only problem is, there isn't a computer we can use for a dedicated server. I was thinking of my laptop, but I'm starting to use it more and more. And again,

So is 1.8 officially coming out this Monday? As in Sept 12? Cause..yikes..this early 1.8 is pretty damn unplayable. Constant crashes and bugs in pretty much every facet of the game. I mean that's fine for something that'a not complete and NOT slated to come out soon, but I can't imagine all of this being sorted out before Monday.

I hope I'm totally under estimating notch and company's ability to program. Cause I'd love to try all this awesome new stuff out on Monday..without crashing every 5 mins

Clearly they are pushing the release forward as they get more and more bug reports

But really, they can get a lot done in a short time. It usually only takes a day for an on-the-ball mod builder to catch up, even.

I played with the 1.8 also, and ran into endermen everywhere, but few actually reacted to being looked at. So I am assuming that they also have to fix that a bit. The furnaces thing is also an obvious one. And placing doors crashed me too. But otherwise the game wasn't horrible outside of the obvious "test version" lag.

Not to mention, Notch has done on-the-spot bug fixes right there at conventions.

I'm really looking forward to the release. So much to explore!

Hmm... I've noticed that the furnaces crash alot more when you try to cook smooth stone, maybe the crashes have something to do with the new stone brick blocks?

the main issue's unclear to me and i don't care enough to research, but here's a patch for it

also it seems clocks are broken in smp after extended use

they permanently burn out no matter what speed they're set at

[edit] seems that they temporarily break if you use /time set 0

As much fun as 1.8 is looking to be, I don't think I'll be touching it until RedPower is on it.

Is the lighting full RGB dynamic/brighter than before, or is it still way too dark and crappy?

Slightly brighter, and there's also an ambient-brightness slider that seems to work pretty nicely. The darkest setting is roughly just slightly darker than 1.7.3.

Ugh, thank God. The previous exponential lighting system was an abomination and I am not at all disappointed to hear that it has made its exit.

Full RGB? You wish..

It really is just this.
It does make for a good illusion, though, and is more practical than a RGB system which would make lightning data take three times the space.

1.8 is pretty good overall though and I'm having fun playing survival with three-four people again!
