If a higher up really does notice from whatever devision of Nintendo this guy is from, then I guess it's a reality check for the leaker. He shouldn't have let something confidential out to anyone, because things like this happen.

In short: Oh well. drx will get over it quickly, unless his contact is a constant source of leaks.

It's either a yes or no here. I'm all for yes, but if worst comes to worst we won't be able to put it out there.

Given the thing seems to be that it musn't be known to be the german version, simply translating it and hiding or altering graphics should work for the article. (Unless there's something blatantly different that points it out)
Just put a disclaimer that the screenshots have been edited (which, in this case, is reasonable enough) and it'd be undistingishable from any other european version.

Not that we shouldn't ask him about it anyways.

I've spoken with drx and the decision is that the German in the screenshots (or text) will need to be rewritten to be in English.

I'm not sure we have who speaks German fluently, but most of the options seems to be known by this point.


It's up to you guys if you want to remove the German in the ROM (all of it.) we can go ahead and release it. Otherwise, we can just edit screenshots or whatever.


Not sure how advanced Ruby hacking tools are (though I'd guess pretty good?), most of the text can probably be copy-pasted. We could also use the opportunity to fix the broken text elsewhere (since it's gibberish anyway), as well as adding a small note on some screen somewhere about the release.


(Normally, I would be against adding a watermark, but much like the Pescatore fix, it is very useful for "marking" a release as not being the original copy, to prevent confusion.)

Is any of the debug text even in German? It's been my impression only the normal in-game text is, and in this case, we can just copy-paste the English text from the retail version of Ruby.

My guess is that some of the debug options use game terms (for instance, the "Use HM" menu, Every instance of Pokeblock), so it does though changing that term would change the option.

That really woldn't work as the different languages have different word lengths, and with German of all things it'd be easilly identifiable. The screenshots have to be edited so there's absoltely no trace of the original text, including guessing its length.

Removing ALL of the German text in the ROM... That'd be the best, but you'd have to edit not obvious strings, all of the game's internal terms (type names and such) and graphics. All of which may or may not be compressed. (Though the hacking tools are probably powerful enough to change it all anyways)

Oh right. So that would be:

* the title screen
* status icons (poison/burn/freeze etc.)
* type icons (Normal, Fighting, Water, etc.)
* contest icons (Cute, Beauty, Tough, Smart, Cool)
* the trainer card
* some menu buttons, I think (like the Back button in the Pokemon menu)

Of course we only have to edit them if they appear in a screenshot (unless we intend to edit and release the ROM?). I'd suggest editing them in VRAM or ROM though, rather than editing screenshots themselves, since that way they'll be perfect. Any signs that parts of screenshots have been edited might lead people to figure out what all was edited and follow the trail... (and we'd get people insisting it's fake )
