At least they're just activation keys, and can be easily disabled.

Now, if they were actual physical copies, this might be a huge deal...

Wacky, but ultimately limited in its effect. I bet they can figure out who used stolen keys and block them from their illegal copies.

Actually

They can't.

For all they know, those with AMD processors (like myself) have rightfully gotten the game for free in this fashion. These keys that were stored, after all, were for free copies, and Steam technically does not have to do anything regarding this until AMD or EA contacts them with what to do and that is they can prove you don't have an AMD processor really. If you do have one, then you just secured a free copy of DiRT 3 because how else are you ineligible for this promo?

And these keys weren't stolen. They were just not protected. You could just add /sql to the url of the promo site and you'd be presented with ALL the CD keys stored on AMD's site, which means poor security is to blame. All the users with DiRT 3 in their library may have it removed if they redeemed their keys in this way, but if you have an AMD processor, you really cannot have this taken away from you.

Now I'm sure there is something I'm missing or something these companies are going to pull, so we'll see what happens. With this widespread of an issue, there is no way that Steam is stupid to BAN every user that got DiRT 3 this way.

Are you sure the promo was just based on having an AMD processor? I really doubt it was that simple (otherwise half the internet would own Dirt 3 by now...)

Besides, you're all overlooking the more simple solution; they likely have a list of what keys they officially gave out during the promotion. It would be trivial to pass along the list of leaked keys for deletion while also passing along a whitelist for those who did the promotion the right way.

All in all I don't really think this is as big of a deal as one would expect...

It was based on purchasing an AMD processor, but they can't really prove you didn't if you already had an AMD processor, which makes this a weird situation I'm sure. Again, not sure of details I'm missing.

As for having a list of keys, there were millions of keys, so chances of figuring out exactly what keys were legal or not may be tricky, especially if AMD had no fucking idea how to secure the keys in the first place.

Now, again, I am not sure exactly. Just what I see and think. I know a few people already activated the game and played it no problems, and this has been a problem for 3 or 4 days so far. No repercussions yet.

Problem is that I think the keys were included *IN* the graphics card box. So someone could theoretically buy an AMD card tomorrow, punch in the key on Steam and find out it's already in use. To be fair, there is a workaround (de-activate all keys, provide new keys to people who have proof of purchase) but... yeah.

Steam has no details about the issue yet.

So far, looks like everybody that got DiRT 3 this way gets to keep the game.

Not like that anymore, I logged onto Steam this afternoon, and what do you know, DiRT 3 is no longer in my games list.

Yup. Figured they'd fix it. They had a list of compromised keys, so it wasn't too hard to remove the stolen ones.
