I've been using Windows Vista for quite awhile now, I've also been doing more and more server hosting since I've been curious as to how well one would run with my computer. Suffice to say that they run pretty well. Though, some have suggested me to use a linux OS for better resource usage.

My question is: Which linux would be the best for such a thing?

now I really don't know
which is the best for server resources but

ubuntu is fairly flexible

plus it is mostly easy to learn
and has a large community behind it

Red Hat or similar is gonna run faster than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is bogged down with user friendliness features and has quickly become sort of a pariah among Linux OSes.

Debian is good, too, if redhat isn't your thing.

I can't tell you which one to use, but I can tell you that, from experience, Fedora doesn't run better than your normal Windows OS.

I personally think Debian is a good choice for a server; most everything you need will be relatively easy to set up. The software available by default is not the most recent, but you usually will not need anything more recent than that and you can just add backports to your sources.list if you really need a new version of some package.

You speak of hosting servers; servers of what?

Having experienced Debian, I can say that if you're not well versed in UNIX-fu then it'll be a nightmare just trying to install things. It's a great server OS, from what I can tell, and if that's what you need then go for Debian, but I'm just leaving you with my cautionary tale.

It's not too bad to use. There are plenty of guides everywhere for generic linux stuff and debian specifically.

Clearly you were not using Synaptic Package Manager. It's way easier than trying to use apt from the command line, and it's part of the default desktop install.
