So I've looked at the newspaper and noticed that the current-gen Sharp AQUOS Quattron is almost half-off at Best Buy. The specs is 40 inches, class LED HDTV at 1080p and 120 Hz, has 4 HDMI+PC connections, along with USB support and Smart Apps, all for only $599 (retail value was $1,099). Now I'm a console gamer, and was planning for an HDTV investment to begin with. So should I go for it now, or wait a bit for other models to go down in price?

You might want to do research on input latency. I'm sure there are a lot of stats on TVs about input latency. I got burned with a kind of cheap TV that rendered games almost unplayable, because there was a lot of latency when I would move in a game, even with game mode on, it wasn't acceptable.

I have a recent Panasonic Viera 1080p LCD that's pretty decent for playing games. It uses an IPS-Alpha panel, which has amazingly good viewing angles and very low latency, somewhere around 2 frames IIRC.

A word of caution if you do any retrogaming, though: most new HDTVs seem to have dropped all but one set of analog inputs in favor of HDMI. Mine has one set of component inputs, and the green "Y" jack is shared with composite devices; switch boxes will not work with such a setup, and will cause composite output to be black and white. I have to futz around behind the TV every time I switch between the Wii and NES, or any other similarly ancient console.

I have an LG LED TV and I'm very happy with it. LED TVs are excellent for power consumption, colors, and adding 120hz for gaming is great. Sharp AQUOS is a decent brand. I haven't owned one but it was one I was looking at before I purchased the LG. In the end it just came down to price. My 47" was $899 online with a free bluray player and wifi dongle for the internet connection portion of the TV. But that sounds like a pretty decent deal for a big box retailer.

From SHARP's website, looks like this particular model (40LE830U) is only 4ms response time, so it's not the ideal TV for gaming. It's not a huge difference but looking for a 2ms or close (mine is 2.6ms) would be the best option. For that price though, it's hard to pass up. Even online I see it for $649.

4ms response time not ideal for gaming? A frame is something like 16 2/3 ms. The biggest issue with gaming to look at is input latency. Also manufacturer ratings are useless either way. Really, anything but the absolute worst TVs will have decent response time (minimal smearing). However, input latency and silly postprocessing effects that can't be disabled are much worse nowadays than before, I've noticed.
