You probably play video games. Obviously, you're here right? Unless you just lurk around for no reason.

Joining this board should have a gaming history biography requirement. Until someone complains for being too biased on membership. So how do you prefer to play? Trading cards, board games, consoles, PC?

Like most others, I started on the classic consoles. Others came along but its that first one you always remember. Since I was just 5 or 6, I barely remember playing our NES but it was my first. Then we moved on to SNES by the time I was old enough to play by myself.

Then eventually my brother and I got more in to PC gaming. He and his friend would play Doom over the internet. Everything changed after that and we weren't as much into consoles anymore.

Games we played included Quake 2, Quake 3, Jedi Knight, StarCraft, Diablo II, etc.
And then we got in to MMORPGs. My brother started playing Everquest with some friends from his school. Eventually I started playing and the rest is history.

when I was three, my uncle told me Duck Hunt was "shoot the doggy" and everyone thought this was hilarious ):<

my first REAL experience with gaming however was with the Game Boy at four years old. I had played an extended family member's handheld extremely briefly and was instantly hooked. Christmas of that same year rolls around and I receive my very own, with Kirby's Dream Land and Dr. Mario. I later sold off Dr. Mario (I knew not what I had ) and got Balloon Kid, which became one of my favorite games of all time. The Kirby series had such a huge, massive impact on my imagination growing up that I can honestly say had it not been my first game, I may not have even gotten hooked on video games so hard in the first place!

Skip ahead maybe a year or two, and I randomly decided as a kid that with mother's day and father's day, there should totally be a child's day because I clearly don't get enough shit as it is! Surprisingly, my parents obliged this twice (the first time I got this neat dominos set) and on the second day which I'm more than certain I pulled out of my ass and was probably even within the same year as the first, my dad surprised me greatly with a gift of a Super Nintendo! It came packed with Super Mario World AND Mario Paint, the latter a game I never expected to fall so much in love with. Sadly, many years later I would sell this system to fund a PS1, a console I would later then sell to get another SNES it was seriously the single biggest mistake I ever made.

The SNES and its games had such a massive impact on my childhood, my imagination would soar through the roof just by playing games on these two consoles of mine. Really, people would think that a kid that age so hooked on gaming would sit inside and do nothing else. Not even true. Games like Mario World would have me going outside in to the large expanse of woods in my back yard and pretending it was the Forest of Illusion, or that various structures made of rock and dead tree formations were the lost city of Kremlantis from Donkey Kong Land. Hell, I'd even pretend that this one cul de sac was part of that concrete looking area from Great Cave Offensive. I used to collect various things people might think were junk that to me I would pretend were things from games. I once had a rather appealing, translucent looking rock which I painted green with water colors (lol) and pretended was the plasma power-up from Kirby Super Star. I even placed red-ish orange food coloring in some water and added it to a plastic toy beaker and pretended my grandmother's basement was subspace.

I think no game has ever had a huger impact on my imagination though than that of Pokemon, which to this day still continues to inspire me with imagery galore. Something about those games always made me feel such a real connection with my surroundings, like I could relate aspects of the game (exploring in woods, traveling to places by bike you might not have seen, etc) to things I would do myself, and it was excellent. To this day, Pokemon remains the game for which I hold the strongest connection with, I guess you could say its like a part of my childhood lives on through these games.

Were it not for these two consoles I'd probably not only not be the gamer I am today, but also the person. While its true in this current day and age I don't play nearly as many games as I used to (its so different now!) and I remain mostly a handheld gamer, though not entirely, I still cannot deny gaming as such an influential part of my history.

On IRC, I gave a nice long account of how playing ROM hacks and attending computer camp and meeting Keitaro led me to this forum so I don't really feel like typing out a new detailed story like some people here seem to be doing.

These days I'm just really about classic platformers and maybe RPGs. I play when I'm in the mood—when I don't really have much else to do or when I have friends over who are into gaming.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I think the first game I played was I think Sonic 2 for Game Gear, or possibly some educational games for Apple 2 if you want to count those. I was maybe 4 at the time. Later, (around 6 to 12) I would be playing NES, SNES and Genesis at a cousin's house fairly frequently. I also got an N64 when I was 9 and a PS1 when I was 10, but they stayed at grandma's so I could only play them a few times per month. I still got a good amount of fun out of them, though. I lived at (another) uncle's from about 6 until 12 as well, and they had a PC, so I mostly did stuff on that. I still prefer the PC. I'm not much in to gaming nowadays, though.

Wall of text!

The very first game I can remember playing was Metroid II on the Gameboy. I always got creeped out by the first Metroid, so for years I just walked on the overworld.

When I was 4 or 5, my parents bought me Yoshi Story for the N64 for my first day of school, a game which I still have. After that, I started getting into Mario 64 and Zelda OoT. We didn't have anything else for that generation, so my game life pretty much consisted of Yoshi, Tetris, Metroid, Pokemon Yellow, Mario and Zelda. Not a bad bundle. Oh of course, I forgot Quake 64. Played it once, had a horrible nightmare, never went back to it. Oh yes, and Wetrix. I never understood that game when I was younger and I don't have it any more.

At this point, I believe my mum had started college (the same college I now go to) and she took a computer class. I can remember going with her on night classes and playing Doom 2. And then came Unreal Tournament. The game which I consider the one that got me into gaming and level design, something which has fuelled my gaming desires since 1999. And I haven't stopped playing it since. Alongside that was Quake III Arena. Also a fun game, but it didn't capture me as much as UT. I played a small bit of Serious Sam, but never really got into it. As time went by, I got UT2003, then 4 and now UT3.

Move forward a bit and we come to the next generation, PS2 and Gamecube. No XBox. The PS2 introduced me to the Ratchet & Clank series, of which I own all of them. And also Jak & Daxter, the very first game that I ever completed. Every Power Cell, every Precursor Orb, all of it. Still one of my favourites. And then there was Jak II Renegade. Nowhere near as good, but still enjoyable. Mostly. And of course, Jak 3, which, in my opinion, more than made up for Jak II, even if I did only borrow it from a friend. If I ever find a copy, I've got to grab it. That game probably started off the whole "Get a game, finish it in 2 days" thing I now have going on. Also, Beyond Good and Evil, but I didn't get into it back then.

On the Gamecube side, Metroid Prime. This is definitely where I started to get into Metroid, but it wasn't the final cause. Also, Super Mario Sunshine. I hated that game the first time through because I always thought it was too difficult, so we sell it. And just this year, we get it back and I finish it in 3 days. Meh. And then there was Wind Waker. I got near the end of that but I didn't finish it finally until this year, not too long ago.

On the handheld side of it, there was nothing really serious. Until I had gotten into emulation and decided that I wanted to try out Metroid: Zero Mission. And a few days later, I bought the actual cart. And some time after that, I finished it. And again and again and again. I believe my current total is finished 20 times, 100% completed 17 times. And that is what finally got me into Metroid. About that time, I also started playing Metroid Prime, but I always chickened out at the first Metroid. Always creeped me out I also never touched Metroid Prime 2 until the Trilogy came out, even though I had and have a Gamecube copy of it. Also, Super Smash Bros. Melee. I played that until my dad hated the game. Even if I did manage to get him to play it with me

One generation onwards, and I have a Wii, PS3, DS and an XBox 360. The latter of which we sold, then I bought again, then sold it again. Never touched it and I probably won't grab the next iteration either. Sold the DS too, which I now agree was a mistake. But, I'm waiting for the 3DS now. On the Wii side, Zelda: Twilight Princess which captivated me and rescued me from the whole Wii series of games although I never finished it until a couple of weeks ago. And then there was Super Mario Galaxy. Loved it. Completed it too. Twice. And then the Metroid Prime Trilogy. The best disc in the entire house and my ultimate favourite games, although Zero Mission is always going to be my overall favourite. Also, Brawl and Galaxy 2, the latter of which I finished. And then Other M. Eww. Finished it, but eww.

PS3-wise, more Ratchet & Clank! And with the most recent one, my first Platinum trophy. Various other games, Super Stardust HD, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed. And, most recently, Beyond Good & Evil HD, which I finished in a few days, then bought on Steam. And we just got Alice: Madness Returns. And I thought the original Alice was creepy

Also, musn't forget the fact that I bought a NES and a SNES. However, I'm lacking a large library for them. SMB1, 3, F-Zero and Super Metroid. And some tennis game that I'll never touch.

DS and XBox 360 are nothing noteworthy. Halo 3, Phantom Hourglass, SM64DS. And with a few emulated games and a Super Metroid ROM hack, that's pretty much my entire gaming history.

Noo I was already using Lunar Magic at the time. I ended up joining because you mentioned Bouche teaching lessons on how to modify SMW music and I was dying to figure that out! Which I still haven't learned, haha.

I think you misunderstood then, too, because he wasn't doing that xD he was teaching -me- how to do it but at the time it was very...hush hush. lolgod remmeber when rom hacking was like this. there's ways to do it now that don't involve injecting a custom hex-edited SPC, however its going the way of ExGfx in that everyone and their dog does it now but only a few a worth listening to

You're just mad cause you lost! :smugdra:

Needles to say I was trying to be serious on the subject. Except I wanted to have a nice surprise since it is the Craziness Domain and all. Very early on as I was typing it, I figured it was going to be a long post. Each letter took a minute or so to work out a sentence that connected to the topic. Regardless, we can continue to discuss the original idea.

Going back, I remember playing a lot of racing games. Of which the first was Top Gear on SNES. Now I look at it and it's so cheesy. Not that it wasn't fun, I still love the music. Although it's so easy now that I'm older it's hard to believe I had trouble with it before.

Go forward a few years and then Gran Turismo came along. I remember playing it for hours doing the same races just to earn money for a Dodge. Vipers weren't even that great but they had raw power that made things easier. Every race I got better but eventually I came to realize that it was a terrible car for cornering.

Years of playing Gran Turismo have turned me in to somewhat of a car nut. Other than my few favorite cars, like the Viper, 3000 GT, and the Supra, I didn't know much about cars. Until I got married that is.

Usually I played with a normal Playstation Remote, but then I discovered the driving accessories. Playing on this is so much easier now, it's so realistic!

This is a good opportunity I think for reflecting on my own gaming heritage and in what specific ways it is superior to everyone else's. How serious I am about that last bit is left for the reader to determine. I'm not quite sure where to start. Some game must have been the most important of my early experiences.

I don't remember not having played video games. So it's a bit hard to look back on the beginning with any clarity.

Super Mario All-Stars is one of the first console games I remember being able to play on my own without anyone's help. There were games I played before that, but because I was so young most NES games without save features were simply inaccessible to me. Using the ability to save, especially in Mario 3, helped me feel like I could share in the experiences my older sister had without having to restart from the beginning every time I lost every life, which was frequently. Playing a game that was too hard for me but with lowered consequences for failure was probably the beginning of my love of games that are too hard. In time I would become less terrible at platformers but I would never lose that drive to play games that force you to die over and over again before you can figure out how to proceed. Dying repeatedly has become the focus of several games I've programmed recently, including my Ludum Dare entry.

When I think about old PC games, I mostly remember Oxyd, Math Blaster, and the early pseudo-3D RPGs that my parents played, and I snuck time on when I thought they didn't notice. Honestly the most important thing about PC games for me was having to think a lot. On the other hand, my console gaming experience was mostly about the physical execution requirements necessary to play Mario, Sonic, and Kirby games. Some of the puzzles in the Might and Magic (not Heroes, that's totally different!) series are still the most memorable RPG puzzles I've ever solved.

The first game I owned (all the consoles and games were my sister's) was Super Mario RPG. Hold on, it might actually have been Yoshi's Island. I can remember having trouble understanding both games; in SMRPG I was confused by the meaning of 'level' in the mixed context of Mario and an RPG, and Yoshi's Island, while cool, terrified me by not telling me when it was saving. Sometimes I wonder if really careful game design could have ameliorated my confusion, or if being confused about stuff like that is actually an important part of growing up.

Despite our basically stupid anger at games for going 3D, my sis and I were talked into renting an N64. Over the course of that weekend we both fell in love with Super Mario 64, and especially the Wing Cap. Unyielding as always, it was a long time before we could be talked into a PlayStation. Come to think of it, unnecessary resistance to the newest, shiniest thing has been a pretty big theme of my video game history. Having got my hands on the N64 and PSX, though, I had a fantastic time playing all sorts of things, from Final Fantasy VII, Spyro, and Crash to Ogre Battle 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Rayman 2. Each game seemed to offer something new and exciting, but that's maybe just because I was being introduced to a new genre every other time I played a new game. By the time the Gamecube and PS2 rolled around, I was starting to take my gaming pretty seriously, tearing through Jak & Daxter and Metroid Prime with wild abandon. Although in more recent times I've tended to focus on just a few games and train myself to have extreme mastery, in those days it was all about hopping between games every few hours. Good times were had by all.

I actually got my start on old-school computers, IIRC. I have vague memories of my dad teaching me to play Sesame Street games on one.

My dad also had an Atari (2600, I think), which we played Pole Position on when I was little. I think it died when I was 7 or so.

Around that time, I got my first game system that was mine and mine alone--a red GameBoy Color, bundled with Pokemon Red (which I later gave away to a friend--she still has it, almost 10 years later). I really sucked at Pokemon but I fell in love anyway, and I've had pretty much every handheld Nintendo system (and every generation of Pokemon!) up to the DS Lite. (Hoping for a 3DS for Christmas!)

The first "modern" console we got was an Xbox, which is now in my room back home despite it technically being my dad's. We also have a Wii, which is primarily played by my dad despite it technically being mine. (Turnabout is fair play, I suppose!) I have an N64, but I have yet to play it (and am kicking myself for not bringing it to college).

Most of my gaming takes place on my DS nowadays. I even have an Acekard, for when I feel like playing old-school games.

I think it was some sort of old Windows computer...I was, like, 3 at the time, so my memories are pretty damn fuzzy.

I think it ran Windows 3 but I'm not sure.
