I can't say much as I enjoy the competitive Pokemon scene and all, but in that case they specifically program in certain elements designed only for competitive battling (such as the EV berries and IV checking NPCs) Smash was always intended as a party game which is why the tournament fighter crowds always have a cow about how unbalanced everything is. Really, its funny, because the competitive fighters for the game seem to really have mostly complaints regarding it. Wasn't Brawl+ created to make the game tournament-friendly? if it gets to the point where you have to modify the game's code itself, you probably shouldn't bother I'm not saying you can't try and have fun and make something out of it, but the game was never meant to be that way and the fact that people get all srs business and therefor make it NOT fun is what ruins it. Its also why there's only very few people left I can actually ENJOY playing Smash Bros. with but that's just my two cents. People can do whatever the they want!

The problem is that people think "multiplayer + fighting = Marvel vs Capcom". Forgetting that this game is not Marvel vs Capcom, nor any other standard fighting game for that matter.
It's not intended to be balanced.

I'd talk about competitive Stealth Rock Monsters Pokémon, but I never play Smogon's rules. But yes, that game IS supposed to be competitive and somewhat balanced. What with there being actual official tiers (Banned Legendaries) and in-game means to support competitive battles. Heck, Crystal's Battle Tower alone already says enough.

Wanna know something funny? The latest tier list has been met with critical acceptance by the majority of the Brawl scene. I like how you're insulting me and a large majority of my friends with the term "Smashtards".

Note: I've been attending tournaments for almost two years. I placed 33/131 at a big tournament recently, and for the record, Final Destination is so polarizing in most matchups that it's almost always banned/striked, and is hotly debated on actually being a "Neutral" stage. You can stop the FD ONLY jokes now.

I don't know about how it is now, but back in the heyday of it, you tried going to a random match online and it was almost guaranteed you'd go to FD. Want to spectate a match? Hope you like FD's background. It's one of the reasons I just stopped doing random online matches and only playing with friends.


I'd also like to point out that there's nothing wrong with people making tiers and using them for whatever. It just gets really annoying when people use it as an excuse to complain about why they lost a match or complain about how other people play in general. And I'm not aiming that at anyone here specifically, but at certain people in general. I'm sure we all know at least one guy like that.

In real life when people jokingly poke fun at your favorite game, you can tell that they're joking.

Being a competitive gamer generally requires that on some level you actually think your game is a good game and worth playing. When people devote long enough to the pursuit of something that holds meaning to them, they get upset when other people trivialize or insult that activity.

This should not be surprising.

CPU: I don't know what you thought that would accomplish but you briefly made me very angry DDR is a party game, I don't know why you take it so seriously! (Here I am using humor to make a point. Even the condescending phrasing of this parenthetical is intended to be taken with some levity. But none of this is communicable in this medium. We do our best.)

Keitaro: I submit that the intent of the designers has impact only up to the point at which the game is in your hands, at which point it is your intent that decides what you do with it. It is what the game is that matters, not what it was designed to be. If it is at all possible to make fun competition with a game, people will go for it.

What they want out of the game is to continually improve. That is what they find satisfying about the game. If you want something significantly different out of the game, it probably won't be much fun for you to play with them, or vice versa.

Ugh. You know what? I agree that the problem is people being too srsbsns to have a fun game with you. I'm part of the competitive Melee community and everyone is so immature that I have a hard time keeping on going to events. Sometimes people refuse to quit their friendly matches when it's their turn for a tournament match, and even look to make sure the organizer isn't watching before starting another friendly. The internal arguments and drama are as stupid as they are pervasive. They can't respect themselves, let alone each other, let alone people who disagree with them on smash. Sure, there are respectful individuals who do their best not to cause any problems, but we're firmly in the minority.

But I love the game, and I want to make the community better, so I keep going to events and I do my part to not be an asshole. I don't know what else I can do. If I was ever playing Smash with you guys you'd see I'm willing to play any silly format you want. I would also want to introduce you to Brawl- because it is an absolutely outrageous game with awesome gameplay in both casual and srsbsns settings.

There's nothing I can say here that will stop anyone from continuing to insist that I'm a tourneyfag (a fantastic term! I go to tournaments and I am sexually attracted to human beings of my own gender, so I can't even deny it!) and a smashtard (This one, I don't even know what it means.) I accept defeat.
