This morning when I tried to turn it on it started up but did not load bios or anything. It also refuses to shut down by holding in the power button.

I spent the mostly the whole day error searching it and I can't find what's wrong. I'll assume it's the mother board, which is pretty shit.

I really did not want to have to buy a new PC, even more so without any time to organize the shit on the HDDs for a transfer. But honestly, at this point in time I don't see any other option.

It's also very frustrating since it worked fine yesterday, I even spent the whole evening streaming stuff just fine without any crash or anything.

The first thing to check in cases like this is the capacitors on the motherboard. If the capacitors are bulging or leaking, like these, then your motherboard is dead.

If it looks okay, there are some other things to try:
  • The BIOS NVRAM might be corrupt. You can clear it by temporarily putting a jumper in a different position or, if you aren't sure which jumper, by taking out the battery for a while.
  • Some other piece of hardware might be preventing the machine from booting properly. If your computer normally makes a beep after turning on, try to turn it on with as few things connected as possible: motherboard, CPU (and fan), power supply, and those little wires that connect to various parts of the case. If it begins to beep annoyingly, that means the motherboard still works.
  • If your computer doesn't normally beep when it boots, try the above but with a single stick of RAM and a monitor (and a graphics card, if you don't have integrated graphics). Try different combinations of RAM as well as a different power supply (and a different graphics card, if you need one).
  • Since you're opening up your computer, now would be a great time to move your hard drive to another computer and back up your stuff. Yeah, I know, doing that won't fix your computer.

Honestly, at this point it's more work and money fixing the mother board rather than replacing it, therfor I ordered some new parts instead to fix it up. :p

You can't "fix" the motherboard; those instructions are how to figure out if it needs to be replaced or not.

OOOH! My bad.

Well, either way, once the replacment drops in a few days I'll start messing with trying to save my files. The HDDs are okay, but I'm unsire how easy you can save installed things when putting in the disk as slave in another unit with another OS. :/

Installed things tend to rely on the registry; you can keep the files, but if you end up reinstalling Windows, you will also need to reinstall all of your programs.

If Windows refuses to boot on your new motherboard (which is very likely unless you bought one that is exactly the same as your old one), you'll probably need to repair it.

I run vista though, I'll assume the steps are sorta the same, but it would be nice to make sure they are before I try anything.

You have to uninstall all your motherboard drivers before you switch motherboards.

If you successfully do that though, you can switch motherboards.

I just got done setting up new unit now.

I decided that I'll try something else instead so I ordered a SATA to USB converter. (Not like anymore HDD fits into this thing anyway.)

Hopefully that should work and I should be able to get out most data files. Hmm... still need to wait two-three weeks before it gets here. (Slow, but free, shipping from hong kong.)

Now I just need another old PC to put in the other HDD in, seeing as it does not use SATA.

Also she or he can boot from the same name brand motherboard and similiar socket use.
If she does this, windows will look at the whole system and compare the old setup configuration to her new system.
If it's the exact same amount of ram, same hdd wether it be ide converted or not, it will take her system less than 45 minutes to readjust with new updates from windows.

Now, if she has a whole new setup with different parts, windows will not like it and ask you to reformat. :\

Yeah... those ideas are all generally more time-eating than simply removing the motherboard drivers and rebooting it.

It's much simpler than everyone else makes it to be, really. Just go into control panel, uninstall all drivers related to the current motherboard, turn it off, install the new motherboard, it'll install a new set of drivers to correspond to that one, done.

MM88: It's a bit hard doing that when your motherboard is fried.

Plus, I think the solution I found is enough to get over all the files I need.

Well, to each their own. I'd probably try to figure out trying to Safemode boot it, maybe using a virtual machine, or even perhaps manual driver installation. :p

Take your new hdd in windows 7, make it primary, take your old windows hdd and make it slave.
Boot into windows 7, it should find your old hdd easily, tell it your the orignal order and apply access and sharing to it.
If yoy do not do this, the old windows config on that drive will not allow you inside to get what you need.
If you have a password for your old windows hdd, give it thr right one, and you should be able to pull your documents fairly quickly.

If you have a dieing hdd and it's pretty time critical I would use suse or ubuntu to pull those files and take the ones that are most important, not the my little pony episode junk! :p

All my downloaded videos and animation/cartoon series are on my old spare HDD anyway, which does not run on SATA. :specialed:

I will most likely plug that thing into another PC to get those files... after all it has Ice metal 2 in it, which I kinda NEED.
