Does anybody else call it a "fizzy beverage?" Or is that just something from where I live?

I'm kind of an anomaly around here. Usually people will either say pop or cola when referring to those drinks, when I almost exclusively say soda. Cola sometimes slips by, but only when I'm actually interested in having cola and not just a miscellaneous carbonated beverage.

I've never heard "fizzy beverage" before.

That's a lot more ambiguous too... you could call Perrier a fizzy beverage, but I sure as hell wouldn't call it a soft drink. Or soda. Or pop.

Well, I guess I can't say I speak for all of California. But it's a thing, down here in Southern California, to call all soda "coke", even pepsi.

The only other thing we call it is "Soda" but the tendency is to call any soda a "Coke" for some reason.

South Australian English.

Although I tend to 'normalise' it a lot more when on the internet because people can't understand me otherwise ._.

A few words let slip sometimes much to the utter bafflement of the non-Australians, as it were.

I've heard fizzy pop before, but not fizzy beverage. I call it soda. Pop would refer to my biological father (my step-father I call dad).

Sometimes for the sake of dorky irony, I call them "carbonated beverages".

Pop, soda, cola--hey, it doesn't matter, we're all cool cats here, and that's just swell. Let's all cruise down to the diner for some cherry phosphates!

American English.

For some stupid reason though, the British English version of spelling things with "u"s in them (i.e. colour, neighbour, etc.) really irks the shit out of me and I don't mean for it to. Bad personality quirk, I guess.

I'm down for that, it sounds pretty radd.

Also, Canadian English here, which means lots of "u"s, and pop, not soda.

I've heard a couple of people around here call them "fizzy drinks", but it's not commonplace.

Totally up for some cherry phosphates, btw.

I speak perfect Midwest American English. About the only quirks I've noticed are that I will sometimes add an unnecessary preposition to the end of my sentences, e.g. "Where's your car at?"

And to weigh in on the pop/soda debate: pop, though I find soda to be suitable.

You think that's weird? When I was visiting Russia, I had lunch in a place that referred to all the soft drinks, including Coke and Sprite, under the umbrella term "lemonade".

I speak in plain Canadian English, I guess.

It sounds like American English, but I did notice there were few differences between them, such as the 'eus' in some words, and of course, the well-known Canadian phrase... Eh?

That might be common in Europe. Orange pop in Germany was "Orangen Limonade". At first I thought it was some orange-flavoured lemonade.

From what I could tell when I was in the UK, in Europe, lemonade is a fizzy drink and basically refers to something like Sprite.

Lemonáda.. yeah, that sounds about right for Czech at least! Actually, I'm pretty sure even cola falls under lemonáda here, though we still commonly use the word cola.

We also use soda (or sodovka) for stuff like Sprite. No pop, though.
