different layouts are fun and quite frankly
having everything in giant squares could be cool

also I really don't like the default desktop
and stuff so it could be kinda refreshing to use

Well, the default desktop is a pretty old and in-need-of-updating concept, but I'm unsure how the floating squares are gonna deal with non-app programs. Seems like it only lists new Microsoft app programs.

Yeah it might be refreshing to use, for a little while, then you'll probably be like "Man, why can't there just be a start button there!"

If you think of it, there's not really "windows" anymore, it's just applications multitasking behind one another

I'm all for a desktop paradigm shift, but I just don't see this as useful for people who actually USE their computers. It seems the more "power user" type people always get alienated with UI changes. Also, applications being fullscreen or crunched in to a sidebar seems like quite a step back in usefulness. Many floating windows you can arrange how you want are much more useful. Maybe if they expanded on the ability to create relationships between windows and the desktop so one could use these features for whatever programs they want, or organize tings in other ways.

I looked it up on Youtube. It's meh...

This honestly feels like it's more of a fancy login screen, or a screensaver. In addition, it could also be just a fancy replacement for your desktop wallpaper, or the applet-sidebar-strip thing. However, I don't think the classic "Window Manager" styled desktop setups are going to go away any time soon.

What I do like about 'Windows 8' is the fact that you still have the original desktop underneath all of the UI changes.

And I *think* that they did say that the new UI was not mandatory and that you could use Windows with the taskbar and such.

But I do like the prospect of making Windows 8 into a more consumer-oriented product.

(I can imagine that there will be a way to make it so then it'll run from the desktop instead of the new shell for enterprise and businesses.)

You know, it was just those 'improvements' they made in 7 which made me swear off using 7 forever. Maybe if they make Microsoft Windows 8's explorer work like the old one, I might use it... maybe...

Hey, it's not all that bad. While I don't like it myself, they raise valid arguments in the article and for the average user, it's probably good.
They even bought the up button back, of which removal I loathed the most.

(I'm staying on Linux, though.)

I thought Windows 7 already solved the up-button issue by always showing the prior folder as a clickable button? (I haven't used 7 much myself, but I remember hearing that) Vista often crops the last folder if the folder name is long...

Still, I suppose actually having the button there is good.

I think the Ribbon is over-criticized, but I'm not sure it's necessary in the explorer either...

#61

Replacing a large info bar with a ribbon saves some space? How about this instead:

Upgrade to Windows XP now and save even more screen space My setup at the exact same height shows 37 files, and more info for them ... (no toolbar, but I don't need one anyway)

Windows 2000's file manager was even better, but XP's can at least be changed to look the same ... with Vista/7 (and probably 8), not so much, to the point I use an alternative instead

The rest of the page doesn't seem that bad, although most of it is about the ribbon interface

The up button I have missed ever since I went vista. What I don't miss in explorer is ribbon system. Thankfully, it does seem like you can close it down.

I do hope I get the option to customize the interface myself, as that gives me just what I want, rather then something premade with a bunch of functions that take up space that I will never use.

This doesn't look too bad, and you can also collapse the ribbon bar to use smal icons. They also said that it's going to have a lot of hotkeys, which is another plus, so one could just remove all the bars altogether. It seems like it's definitely an improvement and a good compromise for average users and people who actually want to get work done, and that a few adjustments (classic mode, disabling any unneeded toolbars) it could get pretty close. Not sure if it'll be possible to move the address bar on to the menubar, though, which seems silly and a bit lazy that the toolbars aren't just some container that can contain individual items. Hell, if they did it right, then users would be able to arrange their own ribbons and groups however they want, but I guess we won't have that. How dare the user want something different than their research has revealed about such a vague group of people. Either way, definitely a step in the right direction but could use work.

The ribbon seems to take a little much space, but that quick access toolbar is great.

Using space that would otherwise be wasted for user-made shortcuts? And giving them sensible keyboard shortcuts?

Yes please!

Go further down, you can make the ribbon use small unlabeled icons.

That is still wasted space too me though. :/

Sure, that is not that bad, I can live with that, but it's still waste.

What do you mean? With a few clicks, it's narrower than the windows 98 explorer.

Because it uses tabs instead of dropdown menus.

Switching to drop down menus would make it one bar smaller, instead of using 4 now, it would use merely 3.

Waste of space.

It's a good compromise between keeping things accessible right away for new/average users, and still customizable to where someone who knows all the hotkeys can just disable it completely. Do you expect them to just have bare folder views and nothing else? How do you expect people to use that without knowing the hotkeys? Businesses would need to invest in training people a shitty interface because you wanted an extra couple rows of files. Does everyone use tiny netbooks anymore? This super minimal interface nonsense is ridiculous. Not everything just has to be completely devoid of visible controls. And I don't want to have to constantly open up menus to access functions. Now, I can certainly say tthat buttons and stuff are getting individually too large, which was silly for a while, but starts to make sense for touch screen crap. Not that I really agree with it, but people like finger-touchable interfaces I guess, and you can usually use smaller ones.

So, just consider it a definite improvement in usability for their target audience, while still not alienating people who are more experienced the way I've noticed 7's explorer to do, and when you get it just turn everything off so you just get a bare file view.

I do not want a bare folder view, I want a simple and logical setup.

One bar for navigation controls, one for actions/commands and one for the actual window, besides, what's the deal with teaching new users this overly clunky system, when most problems still use the old system, which in fact works rather well? Hell, even their own research shows that the context menu with hotkeys is the most used way, and also the best way in my honest opinion.

The system I want as standard (the old one) is perfectly functional, and almost everyone knows it, and neither is it complicated.

Catering for the lowest common denominator is stupid when the lowest is ten miles behind the average.
