Drag's Post #377
You know, game styles. Type of games. etc.

My personal favorites are platformers, puzzles, design-run-resetters, and micro management games.

I don't know why I like platformers so much. For some reason, I'm fascinated with the fact that you can fall off the screen, and you lose because of it.

With me, puzzles can be almost anything. There are puzzle platform games, like the bugs bunny's crazy castle series, or lemmings, and there are falling block puzzles which I don't think I need to name. They usually are simple games, and they tend to be fun. I don't like collapse or bejeweled 2 though...

design-run-reset is just a term I came up with. Think about how The Incredible Machine works. You have a playfield which shows its initial state. Then you usually place things on the playfield, and then you "start" the playfield, which causes the physics and action to start going. Then you just watch what happens, as it happens. Then, if it doesn't work right, you reset the playfield, which makes it go back to its initial state, and you rearrange your stuff/place more stuff, then you run again, etc. These games always have some kind of appeal to me, but I'm not sure why. I think it's just fond memories of the incredible machine.

Micro management is stuff like ottd, sim city, sim tower, sim anythingelse, roller coaster tycoon, and other stuff. However, out of the other genres I like, this is the one that has the lowest ratio of games that I like.

These days, most games tend to be sports, racing, or FPS, which are three genres that I really could care less about. The Wii is really the only thing that has any games of interesting genres to me, which is why it remains to be the only next gen console I own. Same with the DS.

I dunno, there are a lot of WW2 games, and lots of FPS games... I just don't like shooters that much, I guess. Usually because there's little room for innovation.

Since I want to apply my programming skills towards the gaming industry, I find this stuff pretty interesting. If I had the chance, I'd try to push for more games of genres that I like. After all, what's the point in programming a game that you don't want to play?

-Rhythm games
-Side Scrolling Platform/Action games with ridiculous difficulties (Metal Slug, Viewtiful Joe, etc)
-Turn Based Strategy RPGs

Rhythm games because, well, I like music in games. It's the second most important aspect to me, next to gameplay. (Some games I even like because of their music!)
Hardcore Action/Sidescrollers because I like oldskool stuff, and impossible difficulties really draw me in because I like to test my reflexes
TBSRPGs because, if I'm going to play ANY RPG (Save a few excellent RPGs like Earthbound and Paper Mario, but I like them more for their story and quirky charms than their gameplay elements) it must be a strategy game. I cannot STAND a typical RPG battle system :<

-Rhythm games
-RPGs
-Puzzle games
-Fighting games (The fast kind)
-Bullet hells
-Hard but fair games

I like rhythm games because of the fact that... Wait I have no idea myself... Maybe I just like them.
For the RPGs it's probably the fact that you actually notice that you really get better. And I also like big numbers that show how manly my characters are
The puzzle games have this really awesome feeling when you pull off an insane combo in puyo pop or go at some crazy speeds in tetris.
Fighting games is awesome when it comes down to multiplayer even more so if your opponent is close to your skill level.
And in bullet hells it's mostly the feeling of "wow wtf how did i survive that"
And hard but fair is pretty much any game where the ai is not cheap

Hmm...
RPGs (except for Final Fantasy :/ dunno why)
FPS (because killing your friends in multiplayer is win)
FPP (First Person Puzzlers) yeah, I gave Portal it's own genre.
Puzzlers (can't get enough of that classic Tetris)
Platforming (nothing like the classic Megaman, Mario, etc.)
Rhythm Games (I like music in games as well)
Fighting Games (Mainly only SSB and Soul Calibur)
RTS (I suck, but I love playing them )
Zelda games (because I forget what genre they go in )

I like platform games. Especially those with an emphasis on puzzles. Editors are a big win.

That may be true, but it doesn't stop me from owning 1 FPS and like 20 platformers.

I've tended to prefer variety.

Likes:

-Platformers.
-RPGs.
-Turn-based strategy.
-Wrestling.

Often play others such as FPS, puzzle, fighting, sports, etc also.

There's few genres I can't get into at least occasionally. Rhythm games are usually that way. And micro management games (Sim City 2000 is one) I used to love in the Windows 3.11 era, but just haven't gotten motivated much since.

General preferences, no specific order. Examples that I particularly like listed:

Beat-em-up/hack and slash (Streets of Rage, Shinobi III, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2)
Platformers (Sonic 2, Super Mario 3, Super Adventure Island 2?)
Shoot-em-ups (R-Type Final, Gradius V, Perfect Cherry Blossom)
Strategy RPGs (Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3, Fire Emblem, Disgaea 2)
Futuristic and kart racing games (F-Zero, Extreme-G (XG2 to a lesser extent, and after that it fell off a cliff...), Mario Kart DS, Snowboard Kids 2)
Puzzle (Tetrisphere!)
Computer RPGs (Morrowind!)

Hmm, list from most favored to least favored, although the gaps aren't always that large.

-Action RPGs, when done right, they feel like an all-encompassing genre(Excluding things like Strategy games).
-JRPGs, Final Fantasy, etc. I tend to value story above most all else, and I have no qualms with turn based combat, and I love elaborate character customization.
-SRPGs, Fire Emblem, Disgaea, and the like. I love strategy, and I love story.
-Platformers! This includes action games with platforming in them, classic, and enjoyable.
-SHMUPs, not sure why I like them, I just do, they're fun.
-Action, beat-em-ups, I like platforming elements damnit, although that doesn't mean I can't enjoy these.
-FPS games, this is here because I don't like the majority of them, Metroid Prime is an exception, among a few others.
-Fighting games, I get bored with them rather quickly. Though they are fun to play, part of the problem is there's not usually anyone to play with, online fixes this though, the Smash Bros. games are a huge exception, they're a genre of their own.
-Guitar Hero/Rhythm games/DDR, I just can't get into them. Atleast I don't have to spend craploads of money on special controllers and other such things.

Honestly, I'm not sure where RTS and 4X style games fit in there, I love them, but I feel I can't move any of those without feeling guilty about something not being high enough up. XD They'd go somewhere around SHMUPs and platformers, but below SRPGS. I include things such as TES somewhere around Action RPGs.
