I think about a week ago when I fixed my phone from a freeze that somehow it triggered having GPRS activated. The thing is, I'm suspecting it's taken $5.80 from my account and I have pretty much zero clue on how to block it. I looked online, and apparently it's possible, but my phone is set up differently. I can find MEdia Net and I can look at the settings, but I can't edit or remove them.

Ugh, maybe I should've gone for a Tracfone.

You should've. My Net10/tracfone is completely worry free. No problems like that.

I've been using the same phone for 7 years without fail.

Well I managed to get the $5 back by claiming I never downloaded an e-mail program on my phone (I did, but in error), so all I have to do is try to not go into areas of my phone that use the Internet.

Still though, Tracfone. But we'll see with this.

On Verizon at least I think you can call them and have a data block put on your account (outside of any setting on the phone), if you really want to stop all data usage... (they don't promote that option, though, possibly because they like to make money off of misclicks ) It might be worth seeing if at&t will do that, if you're worried.

I did exactly that after I was getting charged like $20.00 a month for "data usage". I had never used any of the internet features on my phone, yet somehow still was getting charged for it. I think it was the phone's pre-installed programs trying to update themselves or some crap. I of course tried explaining this to them (AT&T) but they weren't having it, fine.

Called em back up , asked them to block this phone from internet network, boom no more data usage charges. The times on my text messages are wrong, but at least phone still does what I need it to do...call people.

Yeah, I managed to snake my way into getting the $5 back by claiming that I did not download the software to access the Internet, had it removed, then got a purchase block on my phone so it hopefully doesn't happen again.

Well, my phone can still access the Internet, but only when I access features that require the Internet. So as long as I avoid those I shouldn't have any more mysterious charges on my phone.

See, with Tracfone, the phones can access the internet, but only in a limited way, and it only charges 1 minute for each minute you're online. So unless something really weird happens, you're safe from that.

That's a plus about having a smart phone. Most of them can turn off data complete so that no app can use it. But the only real reason to have access to the internet anywhere for email, browsing, etc. So not really ideal to have one as just a phone since they're more expensive. I use my phone's internet access all day long so I really couldn't do without it. I have an iPhone with AT&T and luckily I was able to get on the unlimited iPhone data plan even after they canceled it for the 200mb/2gb plans.

One thing I do like about AT&T is that our bill is always the same. With Sprint, it would adjust up or down from constantly adjusting tax rates but AT&T doesn't do that.
