Origin.

They offer the ability to play without it connected/running, then say they'll deactivate your account if you're inactive!

Yeesh. That sucks. At least Steam lets me free up memory by closing it from time to time.

No, see, you don't have to have Origin open to play the games, something Steam doesn't let you do.

HOWEVER, if you forget to ever load it up, you lose it all.

Really, not having it open all the time can be an advantage, but at the same time, Steam isn't going to disable your account if you are inactive that long, let alone do I think they deactivate your account ever.

I find that concerning.

That's quite a strike against Origin, especially as I quite often don't open up my accounts for a month at a time if I've been busy/play offline due to being on a laptop with no internet.

Ugh. I shall have to find a sensible way to get Mass Effect 3, because I doubt it will appear on Steam now and Origin looks like a derp.

Yeah Origin is doomed to fail. I don't mind Mass Effect 3 not being on steam, Ill just wait until it is to buy it. I don't want or need more than a single storefront on my system.

I personally use multiple storefronts, although most of it comes down to being HIB/Good old games and Steam. I have used the Apple App store once or twice, too.

I'm personally a tad wary of relying entirely on one service.

Multiple storefronts are fine, but Origin strikes me as being an annoying/stupid one that should be destroyed before it grows any larger.

EA is offering a free game (Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2, or Medal of Honor) to Battlefield 3 preorderers. Why not just $40 Origin credit instead? Oh wait, that'd make too much sense and the customer would actually have some choice, so EA would never do that.

Lessee -- three games I care nothing about? Doesn't really make my decision any easier. I like DICE but I loathe EA; I really want to play Battlefield 3, but I don't want to have to jump through all the hoops. These "perks" are just to try to get people to "jump ship" from Valve; this whole thing has nothing to do with Valve's DLC distribution rules, and anyone who thinks it is hasn't bothered to look beneath the surface. It's all about building a solid customer base and then being able to claim Origin is "successful." They even want to punish you for not using Origin if you don't log in for a long enough period of time, or make you rebuy a game if you haven't used it.

The plan is probably this: make BF3 and other big names like Mass Effect 3 a non-Steam "exclusive" for now (despite it being on other services) to build an Origin installed base. 18 months or so after release on Origin, release Battlefield 3 (or whatever) on Steam when it's no longer as big of a cash cow to reach those "stubborn" people who didn't get the game originally. $$$ ensues.

*sigh* I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. I'll probably preorder the game anyway, but I'm not happy about giving EA any more money and inevitably supporting this nonsense.

I'm more excited to play Red Orchestra 2 than either BF3 or MW3 at this point.

I don't have a desktop to run 2011 releases yet, so I don't bother Origin anyways.

Only preordered the X360 version because of the above issue on system requirements.

Origin is still terrible, I don't want it, but now it's looking like EA could be doing worse things - they could be doing what Activision is doing to Modern Warfare 3 -- it makes what EA's done to BF3 look pretty tame.

tl;dr: Modern Warfare 3 is going to require an additional $50/year subscription if you actually want to be competitive. Elite members get experience multipliers, early access to DLC [though they have to still pay for it], some special weapons, "promo weekends" where the experience multipliers are higher, clan vs. clan wars with real cash prizes, among other things. Plus $15 each for all -20- of the DLC packs Activision is planning.) Add that to possible subscriptions to XBox Live and you've lost a whole lot of money. It's like the free-to-play payment model, but the game isn't actually free. They only grudgingly let you in for the $60 you already spent.

I could care less about Call of Duty anymore, especially given I'm a 360 owner. The multiplayer trailer for MW3 on the XP event was tacked-on at the last second to me. Why bother the CoD Elite when the features in BF3's Battlelog is free?

EDIT: I've paid BF3 in full on the Xbox 360 version. Heard rumors about the closed beta coming tomorrow to Medal of Honor: Limited Edition owners, or people who preordered at Origin. But I don't know if that's true. Open beta is coming 2 days after the closed beta's release.

So, Bad Company 2 retail is $20 here. Worth the purchase, or should I wait for BF3? (Also, if Steam is a better option, feel free to recommend that too.)

Wait for BF3. BC2 is likely going to be a ghost town as soon as BF3 is out.

Open Beta has been confirmed!

It'll be out on the 29th (27th for those who preordered it at Origin or own Medal of Honor: Limited Edition).

Got my beta key in an email this morning.
EDIT: First thoughts: The sound is laggy as hell, but that's probably cause my machine chugs on low/medium settings. Also, I'm REALLY terrible.

I'll have to wait until Thursday obviously. Hopefully it won't be unbearable in lag by then.
