Lately I've been downloading quite a lot of FLV files (mostly from youtube-esque sites) and I have quite a collection of FLV files, but an issue arose that I wasn't expecting... Windows 7 doesn't render the thumbnail for FLV files! I have Haali Media Splitter as part of the Combined Community Codec Pack (comes with Media Player Classic) and I can open the files fine with both Media Player Classic and Real Player.
This wasn't happening on my other Windows 7 Ultimate PC (an upgrade from a Vista) but now I'm on my laptop (since I moved) with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). I have tried a few methods I found on Google but they did nothing (apparently they were targeted towards Windows XP). I've played around with FFDShow and nothing.
Any ideas? Has anyone had this problem before?
Also, MP4 and RM files do not get thumbnails either, but I'm more interested in the FLV files because most of my videos are in that format. |

| Nope, they don't show up at all (I see its default opening program's icon). And I don't use Real Player (although, I don't find anything wrong with it) - I just downloaded it to see if its file association could do anything but yeah, that was stupid. |

So long as you're in thumbnail view, Windows 7 should be able to show thumbnails for MP4 files by default. This sounds like a broken CCCP install.
Do you have any other codecs/players installed that are not part of CCCP?
Edit: Originally posted by Schala Also get rid of QuickTime Player, if you have it, and replace it with QuickTime Alternative...
This isn't necessary in most cases. Haali's splitter and FFDShow can take care of the extreme majority of MOV files. ____________________ |

I only have Real Player which I downloaded AFTER I noticed the problem. No other codecs have been installed since the laptop is new and one of the first things I did was download the CCCP... I tried reinstalling it but the problem persists.
Interesting, I opened the Preview Pane in explorer and by clicking on the FLV and RM videos I get "No preview available." but MP4s don't say anything, it just stays blank. (avi files display the thumbnail fine) |

I reinstalled, made sure it was enabled and followed all of the steps in that article but the thumbnails still do not appear (for neither the FLVs MP4 nor the RM files)
Maybe that article wasn't written for Windows 7 or with Windows 7 in mind? |

Yes, I did reboot after the uninstall. I do have UAC on but it's on the lowest setting (I rarely get bothered by it) ....
I'm tired of this, I wonder what's wrong, it used to work on Vista and my Windows 7 Ultimate (it was an upgrade, though - maybe it kept most of the registry involved?)
Anybody with Windows 7 has this same problem? |

| Something to check: Even if you never use Windows Media Player, it still needs to be turned on in Windows if you want to display FLV thumbnails. Windows 7 uses Windows Media Player 12 to generate thumbnails for non-native formats. Go to Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off - find WMP 12 and make sure it is on. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, now go into K-lite or Shark (either one, doesn't matter which one) and set ffdshow as the preferred 64-bit decoder for H.264, because the 64-bit versions of Windows use the 64-bit decoder to display thumbnails. You may need to run K-lite or Shark as admin (Right-click + Run as Administrator). |
