Or in laymans terms: "Sleep mode doesn't work after installation of new video card"

I installed a Nvidia Zotac GeForce GT 430 PCI express card last night (to replace the literally crappy on-board one: gaming graphics on WEI went from like 2.4 to 5.5!), and when I went to sleep mode, it wouldn't come out of it completely. The monitor wouldn't turn back on, and at the same time, the keyboard didn't appear to light back up either, yet the computer itself seems to have come back up just fine according to both its activity, and the event log (which indicated that things seemed normal).

If anything helps, it runs Vista (yes, after my next web design project, I do plan to try and go up to 7), and the monitor is attached to the VGA port right now, but I do have DVI cables too. My card has DVI, VGA, and HDMI ports.

I did some searching, and it looks like maybe you could try a driver update, or try a different monitor with it?

It might work. If not, you may want to replace the motherboard. If anyone else has any other ideas, that would be pretty good.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Yeah, I'd be looking at drivers as well. That's generally the stopper when it comes to power management. You might find some known problems, or different versions to try that work better than others.

Part of me is regretting that update, as

A. before rebooting, it still didn't come out of sleep.

B. The computer failed to boot twice afterward. Once on the black screen between splash and login (it hung), and then it rebooted after I logged in, and helpfully told me it had recovered from an unexpected shutdown.

Try a system restore to before you upgraded the drivers, perhaps... failing that, maybe your computer is too old for that particular video card?

Your power supply may not be beefy enough to handle the new video card, especially if it's a pre-built system. Most computer manufacturers tend to use a cheap PSU that can run the existing hardware and maybe one or two extra components (like optical drives), but not much else. Could you check the maximum wattage printed on your PSU and post it here?

Newer graphics cards need more power supply power...so the instabilities you might be experiencing could be related to it pulling more current than can be supplied. If you don't have one at least 500W (or even 600W), then you are going to need a new power supply for sure.

I haven't checked the voltage recently, but I know for a fact that the power supply in this computer is not the stock one; it got updated after the old one died.

Well guess what, somehow its working again!

Though, I've been unplugging my backlit USB keyboard before putting it in sleep now, and I had also recently switched from VGA to DVI as the connection. I wonder if any of those are connected.

Id sooner blame the keyboard than the monitor connection, but it's more likely your problem is elsewhere.

Hm, I dunno...my laptop acted really bizarre when I tried to connect one of my monitors via DVI. The screen would turn on and appear to work normally, but as soon as I tried to change video modes or swap the screens around, it would stop receiving a signal until I rebooted the laptop. My USB ports also stopped working, but I'm not sure if it was related...
