News article

With the latest advances in treatment, doctors have discovered that they can successfully neutralise the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The so-called ‘combination therapy’ prevents HIV from mutating and spreading, allowing patients to rebuild their immune system to the same levels as the rest of the population.

This is truly a good thing to hear, and hopefully they can make further progress towards a complete cure.

Then there's still other diseases that don't necessarily have a cure yet.

*hydrapheetz wonders when the cure for diabetes will be found.

Despite the fact that there are still a lot of other diseases out there and whatnot.. I think this is wonderful. I can't really think of much else to say about that. I'm just bubbling over with .. 'that's fantastic'.. ness. heh. It's a great step. *nod*

And the ultra-conservative people out there will bash that these researchers are only promoting promiscuity.

For the record, if we can cure this, we efforts can be focus in other efforts.

I heard about this a few years ago. Use one drug, the virus mutates to become immune to it. Use a second drug, it mutates again. Use a third drug, and any further mutations will kill it.

Though if I'm not mistaken, isn't HIV remarkably easy to avoid?

...Yes, you do bring up a point there, ntn. How annoying. Regardless, we've at least made a great degree of progress with this.

And, Guy, to answer your question. Well, I have no idea, considering I have next-to-no degree of medical knowledge. So, maybe. :/

Cue conspiracy theorists claiming that the scientists only advocate this because it depends on continued treatment (and thus leads to more money flowing in).

Still, awesome news. I wonder if it's possible to treat it to the point where it won't transmit to others? Not terribly likely, I know, but... optimism.

Huh... that's pretty exciting.

I hope they manage to make it useful enough to help all those poor people in Africa.

But in order to help them, leaders of those countries *coughSouthAfricacough* need to acknowledge there is a problem...

Drug cocktails like this are nothing new. It's why Magic Johnson is still pretty healthy. What would be nice is if they found a way to do this cheaply so anyone could have this.

Well, yeah. You can only get it through "fluid transfer" (ie: sex, or if you have an open wound/cut/whatever and get the blood of an infected person on it, stuff like that).

But...how do you know that the people you interact with are not infected with the virus? Aren't most infections caused via transmissions by people not knowing they have it?

Despite the fact that it sounds just plain silly, it actually looks like they might have something there. Well, it's just great to know that we're actually making some sort of progress on it, rather than what I was lead to believe was complete stagnation.

Until you get raped by someone with it, or try to have a child with someone with it...

Or get it by breastfeeding, or are born with it because your mother had it.

EDIT: Or your condom breaks, or by god knows what coincidence you wind up mixing blood with someone else.
