I've got Toshiba Satellite A300D-21W laptop, which I've used pretty happily. I've pretty much installed and tried XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Gaming-wise, my computer worked fine in the past with Windows 7. I can't remember what I did in the past, but now whenever I'm playing any game, I occasionally get major graphical lag that lasts from five to ten seconds. I first thought it'd be because my computer heats a lot, but I've got a cooler pad and all... not to mention that I have played without this kind of lag in the past.

Bleh, it's probably the drivers...

Could a Win7 x86 install cause slowdowns, because my computer seems to be 64-bit?

Paulguy's Post configuration
If it's accompanied by slow loading times, and the lag happening usually when you're entering "new" areas, it could be due to slowdown from textures being loaded in, meaning that file reading could be slowed down for some reason. There are many things that could cause this.
If it's just seemingly otherwise random, occurring in an area you've been in for a while, then I dunno. Something in the background is just using a lot of CPU or IO time or something.

The lag happens usually in-game after a period of gaming. And it's constant.

I have to toy around the power options. My laptop is almost always hooked up on power.

If the game starts to fill up your memory, then you'll start chugging as it has to buffer to disc.

Otherwise, power saving will lower your CPU and GPU power, also causing chugging.

Then beyond that it could be a graphics driver/game issue causing things to get clogged and slow down somehow, like a memory leak.

There could be a background task that periodically loads your machine. Windows Defender started doing that to me not too long ago; I disabled it since I already have an antivirus running.

I checked power settings, no avail there. Funny enough, changing the power settings to Maxium Performance actually almost overheats my computer. I disabled Defender too, but the lag seems to return ever so often.

I had this problem and I fixed it, I just can't recall how

Hm. That is pretty strange. I wish I had more ideas, but none yet. I guess watching task manager while playing it windowed might help--identify if another program starts eating CPU when it lags.

Installed Win7 x64 since my computer supports it. Updated drivers. Swapped around power options, disabled Aero, uninstalled Avast, lowered graphic settings in games and still I get that damned lag. There's always a minute of fine gameplay then the game graphically lags for five seconds, before returning to normal.

Spiky gameplay.

Well, I think that pretty much confirms you've got a hardware problem of some kind.

My money's on either the video card or CPU.

...okay it's overheating, even with a cooler pad.

Guess I'll have to try and open this thing to wipe out the muck inside...

Goodness gracious, that's definitely some heat.

You might want to make absolutely sure the system fan is working, as that tends to be one of the first things to fail. If it is, then yeah, give it a thorough cleaning.

Just have to find a way to open this thing up gently. It's old, but I can't afford to scrap it.

I had a laptop once that was overheating and would shut down. When I opened it up, I found a ginormous dustball blocking the entire heatsink air exit. Once I removed it, it fixed the overheating problems. I'm sure there are youtube guides out where as well as maintenance guides from Toshiba that will tell you how to open your laptop.

81*? Pansy, my laptop IDLES at that temperature!

.. okay, so the cooler on that is totally shot. But yeah, temperature has been your issue the entire time. Most coolers are useless; they don't direct the air where it needs to go and beyond that, the heat isn't being dumped into the grille fast enough anyways. Best way to fix it is to check the fans, clean the cooling system, and then blow the dust out of any other passive vents for good measure.

Also, be forewarned: Toshiba? Be prepared to disassemble the entire laptop to get at the cooling unit.

I haven't found a proper screwdriver yet. I did use a vacuum to suck some if any dirt out of the fan and cleaned the cooler pad as well.

I could smell the dust in the fan, though.... goddamnit, I have to open this when I get a proper screwdriver.

Well! Vacuum helped the lag at least. Still have to clean it up.
