It's the most up-to-date codecs I know of for this case...if this doesn't fix it, then I'll likely think that there's something wrong with the vid...

...and you should really consider getting the original emulator movie file instead unless it's some dumb N64 run.

VLC usually runs it just fine for me, but occasionally VLC will inexplicably break for no reason until reboot.

But yeah, I've never had a problem with TASes in VLC (aside from above), even without downloading any extra codecs.

Have you killed all stray VLC processes? (protip: PsTools is a lifesaver when one uses Windows)

All it will do is sit at the default window (rolled up, no video display), and when "stop" is clicked, the video window will show up for a fraction of a second.

I'll make sure to give that a try next time I encounter it, though.

Not sure what video/audio codecs your AVI file uses, use AVICodec. It tells you what they are so that you know whether or not you have them.
