I just got a new laptop, but a lot of the files I copied onto an external hard drive won't copy over, including all my music (some of which, I hasten to add, is very hard to find, so just downloading all of it isn't necessarily a possibility) and roleplay logs.

Can someone help me out with this and tell me what the fuck I should do? It's kind of a big problem. :/

What type of error message do you get? It doesn't help if you're vague with "not copying"...

How do you mean they won't copy? Does it give you an error message or what?

Edit: Too slow.

It does give me an error message, saying the file(s) cannot be found, despite them being on the drive (yes, I checked).

Try running a defrag and/or chkdsk on the drive perhaps? Also run a virus scan...

Try to see if they copy on the other laptop/computer you have. IF they do, it may just be a compatibility issue.

If you can, try copying them over from their original source instead.

I just use my external as a 'in case my computer bursts into flames' backup. When getting new comps, I just copy the files over from source to source. Though if those files aren't working on either, maybe your external has something wrong with it.

I'm not sure what exactly that would do. Some of the files ARE copying over, but many of them aren't.

I just tried unplugging and re-plugging it, and it prompted me to "Scan And Fix", so I'm trying that.

UPDATE: That seemed to do the trick.

File paths are generally limited to 255 or so characters, and when you hit this limit the error messages tend to be unrelated to the actual problem. Check to make sure the file names (source and destination) are not too long.

If the external drive is NTFS, you may need to take ownership of the files before you can copy them.

Edit: Edit-ninja'd

Okay, good news and bad news.

The bad news is that it turned out not to work after all. The good news is that my dad figured out how to directly connect my old lappy to my new one, so transferring files is now a cinch (albeit long and boring).

This will probably still be of use after the fact, but defrag basically makes files whole again on the physical drive instead of being segmented into parts. This ties in with chkdsk, which basically scans the hard drive for any errors and tries to fix said errors.

Also like Joe said, it could've been a compatibility issue, though I sort of have little clue as to how that was messing with the transferring without actually seeing the problem in action.

It's pretty awesome though how your dad was able to think of that. I don't think a lot of people would think of physically connecting the laptops, since really the two computers would be connected to an internal network and thus file transferring would be a cinch. All it is would essentially be would be akin to copying files off of the Internet.

I thought of it, (see above), because I've had to do that before.

:p
