As the title says, I'm looking for detailed XNA 4.0 tutorials. I thought I had found some very good ones. Unfortunately, when I got past all of the C# stuff and WinForms practise stuff, it turns out that they use XNA 1. So there's a week wasted.

I have hunted around for them myself, but the only ones I get are just ones that tell you to copy stuff down. They don't tell you what each line or each section does. So, I'm hoping that some people know some good XNA tutorials.

Mind expanding on that?

It's kinda lame to tell people to "stop using [x]" without stating why.

Probably has something to do with the fact that XNA/DirectX are not really portable to non-windows OSes.

Zero: You're better off reading the MSDN (Online Help) for XNA. That'll give you the most information on the individual classes and function calls. Microsoft really does an amazing job on the MSDN, there's no end to how helpful it is.

I do want to eventually branch out into multi-OS development, but I feel that starting with XNA would be a good launching spot. And yeah, not explaining why I shouldn't use it doesn't help me at all.

Ah, thanks. I've had a quick look at it does look like a great resource!

And for anyone else who may be interested, I also found this, and they are, so far, pretty good. It gives a detailed explanation of why you're doing what you're doing and seems to cover a wide range. However, some of the guides are still XNA 3.1, so I'm hoping that I don't run into too many compatibility problems when I get to them.

OK, then, it's just annoying seeing games where people use some library that has no chance of ever being portable. Also, you might say you'll start with some nonportable development environment, but you'll get used to it, and might not want to try to learn something else when you're already comfortable with the one, so it'd be better to start with something that you know would be able to expand to other platforms in the future.

Also you people are assholes sometimes.

Why use a good framework that's proprietary when you can use a shitty one that's usable everywhere? :specialed:

Use what gets the job done.

Says the guy who brushed off 01's original question and scolded him for daring to start with a framework that isn't natively cross-platform.

I suppose kids should stop using BASIC, lest they get comfortable and refuse to move on to more complex languages!

To be fair, I still code in a variant of BASIC

Does opentk implement xna? It doesn't appear to be the case, at least not entirely. Mono and opentk do look like a good option, though, for multiplatform support with C# game development.

Also, maybe they should stop learning with basic... See: all the random rom hacking tools that are vb6-only.

Also, my "scolding" wasn't specifically directed at him. Mostly just directed to the use of that stuff in general. I just wasn't specific enough. I figured people would know considering how pissed off I got about terraria, which I still need to run in virtualbox, and it's not a very smooth experience.

But I guess you people just like jumping to conclusions and starting drama, as usual.

With all due respect, when a reply is not put in context the default is "in reply to the post above."

If I didn't have access to BASIC on my Atari XEGS (and later my first PC), and was instead forced to start with something like C, I might have lost interest in computers entirely. The language and its relatives still confuse the hell out of me.

Just because some people continue to use BASIC longer than they "should" doesn't make it a horrible first language.

I learned how to program with C.

All it did was cause me to hate programming and not use it for the next 5-10 years, only to begin anew with PHP.

And then C++.

I think what really matters is that you use the right programming language for the job. Windows-only DirectX/Xbox stuff? XNA. Cross-platform? Not XNA.

Besides, the only people who get hurt by someone sticking to a limited language is the person who sticks to it. No need to get feisty about self-injuring practices. :p
