That's right, folks! Republic High School in Missouri recently decided to ban Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five and Sarah Ockler's Twenty Boy Summer. I admit I'm not really familiar with the second book but Slaughterhouse-Five is widely hailed as one of the greatest works of American 20th century literature. It's a shame that literary masterpieces are still being banned for being un-Biblical. Welcome to America circa 2011.

Ugh. Book banning is so ridiculous.

Luckily, my mother is a bookworm who actively encourages me to read controversial literature (I read The Catcher In The Rye for an independent study project in 7th grade, Lolita for 12th grade English, Bridge To Terabithia in 4th grade English, etc.). I've never read either of the books mentioned here, but I've definitely heard of Slaughterhouse-Five.

In my opinion, once kids are in high school, they're definitely old enough to decide for themselves what they read. And I don't think that schools should control what kids of any age are allowed to read, either--if parents aren't okay with their kids reading certain books, I guess I can understand that, but schools shouldn't have control of that,

Missouri is a back-water heckhole. Reading books like "Black Like Me" only has shown to me their intolerance. Nothing they do would surprise me, except for if they suddenly changed face and began doing tolerant things.

All I have to say is, book bans make me sick... it doesn't matter if it's Twilight or The Catcher in the Rye

Banning and censoring books and other media is ridiculous and must be stopped, if you ask me...

Yeah, it definitely should be stopped. I'm still mostly surprised that this is still happening around here, but then again, I think people try to get Huck Finn banned like every other year in the south, too, so I'm not sure what to think. It's pretty sad.

Well, they've gotten away with it for 200 years, so they're a bit slow to change.

I would imagine it had to do with some objectionable moral panic that, if read, would instantly have kids becoming vulgar, evil, corrupted children like always. I dunno, that tends to be the thing that gets stuff banned much of the time. =/

I wonder if Of Mice and Men and Fanny Hill are banned too...

Both are pretty controversial books, the latter of which wasn't publicly and legally released until about the 1960's.

Yeah that's kind of what Rick was getting at.

Sarcasm. We has it here.

But it's truly amazing how much can be done if we claim we're trying to protect children.
