I suppose the activity of the IRC channel reflects the activity of the two stickies in the forum.

I'd definitely support removing the New Thread button from this forum, just to make them more lively.

I still wonder why the New Thread button hasn't been removed from SM64 Hacking, considering how many n00bs still don't understand what "DON'T POST NEW THREADS" means

I'd like a mod review feature for the SM64 and NSMB hacking boards, where they have to look at the post and approve/deny it, actually

It would be nice to restrict new topics to people who had been here at least 3 months (in the SM64 forum that is.)

It seems like you might as well restrict new threads in that forum to moderators; they're so rarely needed anyway, if someone really needs one they could just ask.

(And yes, delayed response. )

Didn't the previous forum have an approval system for people to be able to post in the ROM hacking fora? I'm not sure how helpful that was, just a thought.

IIRC it was the 3rd Incarnation of Acmlm's Board. And I can't say for sure, but it might not have been well received within the community, hence it never returning.

It worked. But do we really need a whole approval system just for the odd new thread that may be legitimate?

^^^ This too. The hacking scene is greatly diminished from what it was back in the day.

Here's a couple of I3 era comic strips about the approval system:

I think this does a decent job at showing what the general opinion of the system was.

Wow, those comics are pretty funny.

Maybe MM would be able to decide how effective that would be in the SM64 forum.

MM keeps pretty good control over the SM64 forum as it is, I'm not sure an approval system is even necessary.

Well, I merely suggested it as a reply to what he said:

It's more a PHP thing than an approval thing. Just prevent anyone with a brand new account from making a new thread in there. It just takes 3-5 lines of code.

Approval stuff is inferior to my way of modding. There is no need to tediously hand-approve people who may or may not go back on their word and suck when you can just delete all offending posts and ban anyone who persists. :p

Well, it may only be a few lines of PHP that can be done in a few minutes in theory, but in practice...

How often does a legitimate new thread ever get made in that forum, anyway? Even by people who have been here for months...

But if you restrict threads to those who've been here for months, you might get new users in a rush to post ground-breaking updates, get annoyed at how the new thread system doesn't work and go away.

Unlikely, but possible

I'm not a fan of manual approval for posts or registrations, myself. They tend to make everything on the board take forever. Once I tried to join a board, and it turned out the admin completely stopped approving new registrations, but the registration page still required approval.

I remember registering for a forum once because I wanted to post something, and getting approval a month later- by then, of course, I had totally lost interest in what I was going to post.

I also haven't had luck with those registrations where you have to be approved by an admin. If I'm registering on a forum, it's likely that I just want to share/say something immediately, and if I have to wait over 24 hours, I will have lost interest.
