So when you're washing your hands, do you prefer to use cold water or warm water? Our company restrooms were recently changed to automatic faucets and they start cold but eventually get to warm.

I prefer using cold water since it really doesn't make a difference. As long as you use a good anti-bacterial soap, using warm water will not increase your germ fighting capabilities.

I use cold water, mostly out of force of habit. I'm right-handed, and the cold water thingamajig is typically on the right side of the sink

Cold water... I mean, if you want hot water you'd have to wait for it warm up anyway.

Even if you're using standard soap, is there ever a difference?

Yeah, I see no need to warm it up so I use cold water.

I usually open the hot water one (left-handed!) but I usually wash them before the water gets even remotely warm.

Basically this. The water's never warm enough by the time I'm done washing my hands.

Cold water.

Because that's how I wash my hands. It certainly helps during the summer but sucks during the winter though.

Generally anything between cold and hot, depending on the faucet design.

Separate handles: turn on hot water, start washing, finish before it gets too hot (not possible in many plumbing configurations).

Single handle: up and slightly left, providing lukewarm water.

I used to wash with straight-up cold water as a kid, but my hands just ache now if I do that, so it's gotta be at least room temperature.

My absolute least favorite faucet design is the ancient kind with separate hot and cold faucets, and spring-loaded handles (usually found in old schools and restaurants). How am I supposed to properly wash my hands if I have to keep one on the handle at all times?

Warm water, since that helps kill off germs (along with soap.)

This.

Also, why would warm water kill germs? If it can make you sick, it can survive at least body temperature.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I tend to use cold water just because it takes too long for the water to warm up anyway. Also, you shouldn't try to absolutely kill every germ, anyway. I mean, the only time yoou should probably use soap is if it's needed to remove dirt/grease/whatever or if you touched something especially bad like a dead animal or something, and probably a good idea after doing a #2, but even then probably not really necessary. It's better to expose yourself to stuff, as long as it's nothing really bad.

Cold water seems to dry my skin out, I think, and I have eczema so I don't think I need any help drying my skin out anymore than it does already. It can get really bad, like I have red spots all over my arms right now! (Luke)warm water seems to be the nicest to my skin, so I don't really have a choice.

I think I may have the opposite problem; my skin is usually very oily and hot water (especially in this weather) makes me feel sticky afterward for some reason.

Warm. I just don't like washing in cold water, and given how my hands are pretty sensitive in the winter... not the smartest idea.

I prefer raging hot, almost-burning water for some reason.

It depends on the season. Summer = cold water (which I then splash all over my face like a child). Winter = warm water. If I've been outside and my hands are numb, I have a very nasty habit of burning the crap out of my hands. That goes over well in social situations where I'm expected to shake hands.

Manufactured in Chicago. :smugdra:

But yeah those are sucky and I wonder why they even did that. I tend to use cold water mainly since hot water tends to feel way too scalding for me.
