Every forum has to have at least one topic about how usernames came about, right? Right? If one of these already exists at this forum, screw you.
__________ My involvement with internet communities started back in midieval times. They were the days of dial-up, where 26.6kbps was friggin' blazing. I had one of those fast connections. I was the man. Back then, chatting really came in two forms: IRC, and direct telephone conversations. However, the HTML Common Gateway Interface was in existence, which allowed web servers to toss up their own programs to do what-have-you. In this case, there was a little HTML-CGI chat room dealie on one site I went to. The site allowed you two options: Display Name, Text Color. I figured "hey, I can make a name for myself here!" However, I didn't want to make a bad name for myself, so I had to think of something stupid. I decided to pick the color first. Ah, hex triplets. Who knew? Well, I knew, but the option wasn't there that you could type in your own color value. It was a drop-down list containing all the "web-safe" colors. You know, consisting only of 00, 33, 66, 99, CC and FF. So I just decided to pick one, mostly at random. It was 0066FF. "Hey," I thought, "that's full-intensity blue. And kinda green, too." Thus, the username was born: Blue-greenish name Guy. But the text was a bit too dark; seeing how the chat room was on a black background. So I picked the next one lighter, 0099FF, which continues to be my trademark color to this day. (See avatar) Then came the forum system. Or, as it were, the "bulletin board." Wait, you had to register your account to be able to post anything? Okay, sure. At least I didn't have to submit my e-mail address. I was familiar with the forum idea at the time, actually, and I knew that I didn't want to have a big-freaking-long username cluttering things up, so I abbreviated it on a per-letter basis. Hark: BGNG. This continued to be my username for many, many years. During one of my chatting sessions, I brought up the fact that (at the time) I was soon to be an uncle. And, as all uncles do, I would need to create a chain of family restaurant. Thinking up something that hadn't been thought of before, I settled on the name "Uncle BGNG's Family Breakfast Kiosk." Then there was another conversation, about some internet loser guy seeking a companion of sorts. This clever guy, though desperate loser, made humorous comments about "Does anyone know a woman whose last name is Perfect? You know, Miss Perfect?" Ah, what a dork...... Long story short, I'll be moving in with her soon, but I really see her as more of a sister than anything. And if my sister's last name is Perfect, then mine must be too. But I needed a first name! "BGNG Perfect" just doesn't roll off the tongue very well. And in my days, I've had people call me "Blue," "BGNG," "name guy," "Blue-greenish" and the like, but never just "Guy." Not once. Ever..... to my face. And the moral of the story is, I'm Guy Perfect, and my domain name is perfectkiosk.net |
