EA's not getting my money now. Almost makes me consider getting Modern Warfare 3 out of spite, but ... that thought is even worse. This is sad because Battlefield 3 looked really, really awesome. A lot of people are pissed off about this; BF3's also going to have console ports and will be on other services like Direct2Drive, but not Steam. The PC crowd was going to get extra stuff, too.

It's not like 30 million people already have Steam, or anything. People LOVE having to install multiple clients to manage their games, right? And everyone definitely wants to get Origin after hearing the news stories about how EA customer info was breached!

The main thing is this could be a precedent. EA doesn't like losing money on Steam's sales. They want to set the price. I could see a lot of large greedy companies abandoning Steam for their own proprietary services down the line.

Boo friggin' hoo. There will still be plenty of indie developers (and of course Valve themselves) to keep the service afloat.

Not that I have any special attachment to Steam; it's just that when Valve has control over those sale prices they tend to do neat things. On a proprietary service like Origin ... good luck getting any kind of crazy sales. Maybe Steam has spoiled me but ... I'm not exactly made of money. When I buy things on Steam it is *always* during a sale because that's when I can actually afford things.

If it reaches say, Impulse, it'll be OK. Fairly decent download manager there too and no tax for me (unlike Steam ). Not like I really need Steam's chat options either.

I might actually just buy a physical copy of the game, I really want the giant instruction booklet!

or I might just get it from Direct2Drive or something

I read up on a few stories about the origins service, it seems pretty bad. Now, I can understand a service starting up to compete with steam, but if you're only going to have first party software then it's not really going to fly well I'd think. One of the reasons I like steam is the huge library of games that it has, not to mention it keeps adding both new and old titles to it!

I wonder if some people will buy Blu-ray drives just for a certain game in the near future, actually... multi-DVD games are annoying nowadays

Remember when a game would come on like 17 floppy disks? A decade later, it was repeated with games on like 7 or 8 CDs, and now we have some multi-DVD games

Also, one thing about Blu-ray discs is that they can store up to 50GB for a dual-layer unlike DVDs which are limited to two layers and 8.5 GB (there are double-sided/double-layer DVDs but they are very rare and unreliable)... so we won't have multi-disc Blu-ray games for a long time

They'll come crawling back to Steam eventually.

Unsure if this is actually happening. I read some comments yesterday and apparently Alice: Madness Returns did not have a Steam listing before release - but it was on Steam come release day. It's possible the same could happen with Battlefield 3; might be a thing where EA only wants pre-order sales to be made through Origin, which isn't the worst concept in the world. Obviously you want to establish the service in some way.

Origin has one advantage over Steam: you don't have to have it open to play games you download.

That's all I can say on the matter.

How common are Blu-ray drives, anyway? I know some people seem to look down on machines that lack them, but I... actually haven't seen very many, and as far as I'm aware the drives are still fairly expensive.

Paulguy's Post configuration
You can get a burner for $100. Readers I assume are less than that even. So they're pretty fairly priced. My laptop has a blu ray reader, and my desktop has a burner. I've never burned a blu ray disc, but my drive did come with a "free sample". Not sure what I'll do with it.

Blue Ray drives aren't that bad, yeah. It's just the lack of use they get that kind of makes upgrading pointless... unless you have a Blu-ray game or want to watch Blu-ray movies, of course.

Bump

Won't be on Steam due to restrictions on Steam's part.

Calling bullshit here.

I think it is something about steam's
revised DLC policy (due to F2P) that EA doesn't like

it's kinda like if you sell the DLC in
your store it has to be available in steam too

EA doesn't like that and neither side is budging

that might be wrong but yeah

e: EA wants to be dumb with exclusive DLC or something

They will eventually cave. It will just take a while. They will probably just release things for Origin first, then later on Steam to make up for this.

It's kinda sad that people are willing to support another service like this just for this game. (Was reading the comments on the article.)
It just makes everything clunky if you have to deal with several services on the same time, which is why it's such a good idea to adapt your games to work on at least all the major ones.

I have 4 services installed on my
computer right now and I really don't mind

only using one is
like saying you only want to buy from wal-mart because
you have to walk across the road to get to target

Except you have to walk across to Target and ask every time you want to wear the clothes from them.

And if you don't go to Kmart every 3 months you lose your access to everything you bought from them.
