Interesting ...

I'm currently trying to get an invite into Google+ so I can destroy my Facebook account.

I wonder how much of Google+'s current popularity comes from being the "private club" that not everyone can get into just yet.

I think it's open to people with Google accounts now, I may be wrong though. If I am wrong, and anyone wants to get in, I could send an invite.

It is, but due to overcapacity those users will have to wait unless they get an invite.

Luckily I got in before that overcapacity happened.

Basically, you can make circles, separating posts between circles if you so desire. A lot easier to keep things you want private... private, and things you don't mind public posted as such. Very nicely done. It also has integrated GTalk, which you can actually link to your circles. It also allows hangouts, where you can video chat and share links, videos, etc. It is a very cool thing.

This may or may not be related to the release of Google+ (it probably is, considering Blogger also got/is getting redesigned) but Google released a revamped YouTube theme.

You can enable it if you want here: http://www.youtube.com/testtube ... it's called "Cosmic Panda"

Frankly, I like it. It's sleek. I'm sure there will be haters, though...

This space is, technically, for rent*.
@Google+: I'm not buying it. I didn't need Facebook, so I don't see why I should use Google+. And do I really want to give Google more personal information?

I don't like it.

First of all, everything is bigger. There's more padding everywhere, and it's even harder to watch a video and read the description at once (doesn't fit in my browser at least). There's no visible separator between the description, top comments, video responses and the comment list - very visually annoying. Related videos are needlessly big. I like how the space around the video is dark, but it clashes with the rest of the page. And worst of all, it's all flash again, no html5 support. I'm officially calling Google backwards.

"Cosmic Panda" has a definite Hulu feel to it, but I think videos on a darker surrounding kind of makes sense... I wonder if they should have considered going with an all-dark scheme instead though.

Of course, I won't use it permanently for now, since it breaks my Firefox replay add-on.

Honestly, I feel that most changes Google make are backwards or just plain retarded. Did I mention I find it highly annoying that gdocs needs java script to READ?

It seems Google+ is open to new registrations once again (although it may be limited to invitations only, I'm not sure).

My boyfriend managed to get in. If you want to, you'd better act fast.

Edit: I can confirm it is working perfectly. I managed to invite a friend just now and he could get in.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Cosmic Panda isn't too terrible. It does seem early on with it. I honestly hope they add more to the channel page; it's missing a lot of information, and the customization is extremely limited. I do like how opening a video from the channel page goes to the watch page, so I can see videos in the size I want, and not have the related javascript bogging down problems.

They have added more visual separation to a lot of things, so hopefully they'll continue that trend. If anything, they've at least spaced individual things out a bit more.

However, that's kind of a bad thing. Everything is really.. fat and puffy. Huge borders around stuff and big buttons, like a baby's toy.

For what it's worth...

News surfaced yesterday that a sovereign wealth fund representing the Chinese government wants to buy a substantial amount of Facebook stock. According to anonymous sources to Business Insider, China wants to own enough of Facebook "to matter."

What does that mean? It is important to note that a sovereign wealth fund may represent a government but is not the actual government, as Business Insider reporter Nicholas Carlson points out. Is China's interest in Facebook a simply a government-sponsored group of venture capitalists looking to get a piece of the upcoming Facebook IPO or is there something more complicated at work behind the scenes?

In the same report, Business Insider notes that Citibank is trying to acquire as much as $1.2 billion worth of Facebook stock on behalf of two sovereign wealth funds from China and the Middle East.

Facebook's user demographics are 70% international, according to the company's statistics page. China has a booming social media industry and U.S. companies are eyeing China as the next great frontier for expansion. Bloomberg reported in May that CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg disagree on whether or not the company should get into China, with Sandberg believing that Facebook would have to compromise its values to enter the People's Republic while Zuckerberg believes it could be "an agent of change" - and is likely seeing dollars signs as well.

...

I wonder how this could potentially affect Facebook in the future.

My, some people in this topic are kinda angry. Social networking isn't just about causing drama. It's a definitely legitimate way of keeping in touch people I want to keep in touch with who otherwise don't really have any other way to keep in touch with me. Preferred medium, I guess.

Google+ sounds nice to me. Being able to exclude people from certain things is great. I'd totally check it out and from all the coverage and stuff it's been getting, I'm kind of interested in seeing where it'll end up. Just because Google does things corporations do doesn't mean they won't or shouldn't catch on. Remember Gmail?

For those still on the fence or not very aware of the differences, here's a good comparison of G+ vs. Facebook:

This is rather poorly written. Also, it's incorrect about the chat feature. There actually is 2 facebook chat methods. One that I believe logs on to the site and uses a similar protocol to what the chat on the main page uses, and as he mentioned XMPP/Jabber, but either works with desktop clients. This also only covers a handful of rather random features, rather than covering the page itself.

Honestly, I see the lack of games in Google+ as a very good thing.

Actually games are a very good point. Is Zynga contracted to Facebook and therefore are only allowed to host FarmVille there, or are they allowed to work with other social networking sites?

That's a pretty awful comparison. :/

The writing is awful, and it also says that you cannot do list specific updates on facebook, when this is in fact VERY possible.

Yeah. I'm in favor of Google+, and even I think that image is lamely written.
