I find most of the puzzles in zelda 1 was easier to solve on your own though. Even if you got more tips in game in zelda 2, if you could not figure something out, you where clueless on where to go.

Hammering a random tree is a great example. I was not even aware you could hammer anything other then rocks.

Zelda 1 wasn't so much a land of death caves as just a desert with random useless "rooms". You WANTED to find the death areas. The whole thing is just walking around looking for the next solvable dungeon and waste money on shops if you happen to find one.

Zelda 2 on the other hand just throws the death caves randomly everywhere and it's ambiguous on where you should and shouldn't go next. Looking for a numbered dungeon doesn't work, you NEED to go to random places. In an specific order. Through a death land.

Don't forget that the palace order in Zelda 2 is fairly linear (if you don't just go into a palace, take the item and leave right away). I mean, theoretically you COULD do the first palace last but then the caves are an absolute bitch without the Candle. Other than that, you need the item in every palace in order to move on to the next one.

Zelda 1 at least gave you options... hell, you could chose to do Level 2 last!

You could also take level 6 last, which was harder then 7 and 8.

These days when I play Zelda I, I always switch the order of levels 6 and 7. Not sure how the designers thought that goriya were harder than wizzrobes.

Wizzrobes used to do far less damage, with blue ones doing the same damage as Goriya and orange ones doing two hearts. Also, blue Wizzrobes were less common.
Really the prototype feels more balanced.

With how out-of-the-way Level 2 is, I know a lot of people who have actually done exactly this unintentionally...

e: Zelda 2 may be frustrating in terms of difficulty, and I think that the way continuing was done is kind of cheap bullshit, but even with that taken into account it's undeniably a more well-designed game than Zelda 1. Zelda 1 offered bizarrely cryptic hints (or no hints at all), endless boring dull barren wastelands with absolutely nothing to interact with, bombable walls with no hints that end up leading to trap guys that punish the player for merely exploring by taking their rupees... I love the non-linearity and sense of adventure it has, but they pulled it off really poorly. It is not a game that has aged well. It's honestly really easy to figure out where to go in Zelda 2 if you're paying close enough attention. And it did contribute a lot in its own way--what with the magic system continuing to be used and the combat system pretty much directly influencing every 3D Zelda game. It was radically different, and I wouldn't mind if they explored something in that vein again--except maybe making it just slightly less painfully, sadistically difficult.

...but, really, this is all irrelevant because the Zelda designers didn't get things truly consistently right until Zelda 3. I'd much rather replay A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening than ever touch Zelda 1 or 2 again.

I like Zelda 2 a tiny bit more than 1...
I like Twilight Princess most, though...

Of course, Zelda 1 aged far worse in comparision, the second introduced most things that at least gave the series a proper world other than a beige screen with green rocks and old men.

It just doesn't try to actively murder you.

In fact, while aLttP changed everything and pretty much defined most of things, AoL did put a precedent for things like a plot and (better) defined landscapes and such.

Though I still think both games seriously need some sort of remake that fixes what's wrong with them. BSZelda sort of was one and I honestly find it far more enjoyable even though it's like a "mini-zelda" and has some of its own bullshit despite fixing most of the old one.

Zelda 1 threw the BS at you hard in the second quest. Walk-through walls? Now how in the world are you supposed to know that trick exists?

you've got the map and compass, beaten the boss (gleeok in level 2, lol) and got your triforce chunk, but still no item

now, there's this hole in the middle of the map, and you just KNOW from your experiences in the first quest that there's a room there, and the most likely entry seems to be the room to the north of it, where that thin corridor leads right up to the center of the adjoining wall

but you bombed that already and it didn't make a hole

you bomb it again, and it still doesn't make a hole

you try bombing it again, pushing in the direction of the wall right up against the center of the wall, because you KNOW this hallway just SCREAMS "THIS WALL IS THE ENTRANCE TO THE HIDDEN ITEM ROOM"

and then, right before the bomb explodes, you play the secret tune and just pass right on through the wall

and you jump and fall backwards out of your chair in surprise

and pull the controller back with you

and pull the console back with the controller, and bump it on something

and the game freezes, and you have to do the whole dungeon all over again, since you didn't save

I needed Nintendo Power to actually tell me "oh yeah, you can walk through walls despite the fact there are NO walk-through walls at all in the first quest and there is NO mention of anything like that in the manual".

I wonder if Nintendo deliberately threw tough "puzzles" in their early games to sell more copies of Nintendo Power magazines and guides.
