A while back, the gadgets on my desktop seemed to be corrupted, so I uninstalled one of them and reinstalled it, hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. I'm wondering if I can somehow repair it using an External Recovery DVD that came with my machine?

Also, Fx doesn't recognise 'uninstalled' as a word. Kinda unusual

I was going to maybe recommend system file checker (Windows's built-in sfc.exe), but that seems to only check the rather low-level windows system files. Worth a shot though, I suppose.

I tried that, but it kept telling me that I needed to be an administrator. And this being the only account on my computer...

Well, I tried /SCANNOW and it couldn't find any integrity violations. It seems that the only way that I could use the other commands would be to give it the path of the file that holds the gadget code, but I don't know what that is.

Could you give more detail on what gadgets are corrupted? Is it all of them? The standard windows ones? Installed third-party ones? How are they corrupted? What does it say or do, or not do? Is the entire sidebar broken, even with no gadgets added?

All gadgets are corrupted. This is what it looks like:

The top one is the third-party All CPU meter. Then, Avast!. Then the blank space is supposed to be the calendar, then the clock and then the CPU meter from Windows. The corruption seems to be pretty random.

Dunno what to say about that. Could try uninstalling and reinstalling the entire gadgets component from windows, if that's possible. If it is, you'll find it in the Programs and Features control panel. That might still leave some settings or something behind though that might be hard to locate.

Also, have you cheked on google? It might be a problem neither of us knows about, but someone else may have and found a solution.

Yes, it just says to use your Win7 disc and repair it. Apparently, it's quite a common problem, but I don't have an actual Win7 disc, just a recovery media disc. And I've just had a look at the Programs and Features, but couldn't find anything for Gadgets, even in Windows Features.

Does the recovery disc have Win 7 on it? There could be a way to use that to repair it. Maybe.

Or maybe it could be repaired by manually extracting and replacing the required files...

It could be some weird proprietary manufacturer thing. But anyway, it could be simple stuff like zips renamed as something else or something along those lines. I guess you'll have to get your ROM hacking skills out to see if you can find out if the files on the disc are extractable.

At the very worst, some, er, 'searching' on Google might find the proper files. You technically own the right to a copy of them that isn't glitched out, anyway.

Eh, I've been burned in the past picking up random DLLs off the internet.

You could look around for a torrent.

You can verify the checksums with this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads/default.aspx

If it doesn't work or doesn't list the checksums, log in using any live ID (hotmail, msn messenger, maybe not xbox live ID...)

I recall hearing from somewhere that the desktop widgets are just java applets. I don't know if this is true, but if it is, it may be an issue with your java installation.

I don't believe the gadgets are java- I don't have Java installed and can use widgets fine. (Though admittedly this is Vista, I don't think 7's gadgets are that much of a change)

Gadgets are zip files containing HTML/JS/images/etc.

I don't really have any suggestions, other than perhaps trying the 32-bit version of sidebar.exe if you happen to be on a 64-bit OS.

Or reinstalling/repairing/upgrading IE, since the gadgets use IE's rendering engine.

I knew it was Java-something... Thanks for clarifying!

Ok, so I had a look at the recovery media disk and it contained WIM files. Opening install.wim with 7zip showed that it had Windows Sidebar on it. Of course, I couldn't just copy it over; I had to change all the permissions. And even when I did copy it over, it was still glitchy. The only other thing I can think of doing would be to totally erase Windows Sidebar from Program Files. But, I was unable to change the permissions on all of the folders within Windows Sidebar, so I doubt I'd be able to do that. I also tried the 32-bit Sidebar, but it had the same result. I've just updated IE, so I'm going to restart and see what happens.

EDIT: Nope, nothing. But I did manage to somehow mess up the sound drivers Fixed that though.

Have you tried rebooting and logging in as admin, and trying to changer permissions that way ?
Don't take this the wrong way, but windows 7 can sometimes act like a high strung up woman.
It won't let you touch certain private areas, not unless you are the complete owner of that machine and know how to come in a different way for doing stuff.
