I have to play DS games in their native resolution. The stretching irritates the hell out of me.

Might be due to the bottom screen being completely filled, yet the top has black on the sides... yet in this mode there's a black border. The blurring doesn't help much, either, for what I've played...

Also, OoT3D is great.

Picked up OoT 3D today. I was not really planning on doing it since I was unsure if the game was worth the price tag. Though, the store was selling it for a good price for a new game AND they had 10% off on all DS and 3DS games today. So I picked it up for 404SEK. (63.5 USD) ´:3

I can't play it untill I get home in a few days though. :<

Does this mean I can use my DS for something other than first party classics and puzzle games again?

I got one of these for my birthday. And the 3D effect does actually work, for me at least... (though my eyes are a little bit sore now... )

OoT 3D is definitely pretty neat. I also downloaded the Excitebike classic thing, but I haven't played it as of yet...

The resizing of the screen for DS/i games isn't so bad when my contacts are out (since the screen looks a little blurry anyway) but my nearsightedness means I can't see the 3D effect and see clearly what's on screen at the same time.

Played more OoT 3D. The details they added to Lon Lon Ranch are absolutely adorable.

I personally can't wait for Star Fox 64 3D, if you couldn't tell...
It comes out Sep. 11th in North America.
And the Excitebike game was cool!
I would love to see Nintendo do something similar with Metroid II...

Metroid II, it'd definitely need that kind of touch. It'd be neat to see in modern 3D.

"And, for the record, XSEED knows that the Internet has done much to taint the idea of anthropomorphic animal characters in the years since Tail Concerto has been released; so if the idea of a world full of cat and dog people gives you the heebie-jeebies, they'd like you to know that, yes, the main character (amongst others) does have a human form. Still, don't expect Solatorobo to drop down any deviantART-style rabbit holes; though the characters are animals, they're not designed to entice the lonely, Sonic-obsessed gamer."

What metroid 2 needs is a remake in the same fashion as what MZM was for metroid. M2 RoS is one of the better games in the series, it's a shame it's so hard to get your hands on the game. It's kinda weird they have not remade it earlier, seeing as nintendo LOVE to rerelease old games.

Possibly spoilers on OoT 3D, if it's your first time playing:

Anyhow,

OoT 3D got some changes to some of the puzzles in the game. In the first room in the forest temple there is a lack skultulas on the right wall, for example. I also noticed that the golden skultula in the water temple behind the closed gate had some changes too. In the original you had to use the megaton hammer and jump forward into the gate since the switch was on the other side. The switch is now outside the gate.

The first of these two was a good change since it was always such a pain to climb that wall without a way to take most of them down. I find the other change a bit more mixed. Sure, it was a really hard puzzle to get that you had to jump forward into the gate to hit the switch, but it's also a trick you could have use of learning, and you don't need the spider to beat the dungeon.

One new neat thing is that the purple ghost make so much more sense now... though I feel kinda bad for it since it was crying.
The battle against him was also change a bit. He now spins right away from fading in, rather then circling link for a while. This makes the battle quite a bit easier IMO.

Game is fun so far, but hey, it's OoT, what else to expect?

I had a quick go of OoT 3D in college a couple of days ago and I love what Nintendo have done.

Hell, the graphics are so good, I thought they actually had stairs instead of slopes. Of course, a perspective change told me otherwise but hey, at least they managed to fool me for a while.

So they only increased texture detail and not map geometry? Kind of a ripoff considering they're asking $40 for it. They get to take a game they already likely long broke even on, and just made some relatively small enhancements and sell it at the price of a brand new game. Also to my understanding, the original engine was mostly C, so porting wouldn't've been a huge effort for someone like Nintendo.

Well, for what it's worth, no item or object is a flat sprite - including shrubbery and fences, which were very obviously flat in the original.

Consider also that if they ported the code directly and changed the stairs, they'd have to reprogram some of the movement code so, among other things, Link wouldn't be constantly jumping down the stairs. This would probably also screw with certain bits of monster AI.

Don't get me wrong, it would've been nice, but I can see why they didn't.

Most games tend to have a separate collision map. You'd likely just have the stairs as the visual appearance, but the collision would be evaluated as a slope with maybe a stairs flag or something.

I have to say, playing DS games in the "expanded" resolution works pretty well for me- of course, everyone's tastes are different here (I found the stretched mode on the GBA unplayable, for example).

There is a lot of updating they could have done to OoT to make it a better game, it's a shame they did not take those steps.

But is it a good game? Fuck yeah!
Is it worth buying? That depends on how you feel, really.

I was not planning on getting it, but I got such a good price offer for it that I simply could not resist. This is not really a full remake, as only the graphics have been remade. I wish they had taken all steps to upgrade the geometry as well as the music, but hey, I'm not the designer in charge. Master quest is a big selling point if you have not played that though. :p

They did improve the geometry of the maps, especially all the areas that used to be pre-rendered. What they didn't do was change the art style and model out every single step on every single staircase. They purposefully chose to give Link two little faded shadows around his feet instead of giving everything and everyone realistic shadows because that is part of the art style. They chose to be true to the artistic vision of the original instead of just trying to make it look super realistic or anything. And to me, that's what counts. Not only does it still play like the original, but it still feels like the original.

I meant the level design geometry, not from an artistic standpoint.

There are quite many changes they could have done to to make the game play better and have things less blocky while still staying true to the original. A perfect example where they went half the way for this is the room where you get the iron boots. (which looked fucking fabulous while I'm at it.)
