The supermarket right next to where I live had a sale where they give away a carton of large eggs for free with a $6 purchase of Hormel® Black Label® bacon, which is actually kind of awesome, you know. Anyway, the bacon had instructions on it for the oven in case you wanted to put it in the oven. The oven method of course sounded more appealing than the close-and-personal-care method of flipping the strips over and over on a skillet over medium heat. So I used it.

To cook the bacon the oven had to be preheated to 400°F and the strips had to be on a shallow baking pan. Then it just sits there for like 10-15 minutes. I went for 15 minutes and when it finished the pan was covered in bacon grease and the bacon itself was nice and crispy and consistently cooked and moreover it was perfectly flat instead of the less-than-desirable state of being all curled up and whatever like panfried bacon tends to be.

Next time I'm thinking of going for 10 minutes instead so the bacon doesn't get as overcooked as it did here.

The bacon was served with my typically sublime and awesome scrambled eggs and hash browns in the shape of a heart. The scrambled eggs were made using generic supermarket unsalted butter which kept the texture of the egg better than the salted kind I've been using. The hash browns weren't fried as completely as they should have been. Overall this breakfast was mediocre with some good, memorable bacon and scrambled eggs.

The soundtrack to this morning's breakfast was The Mountain Goats's 2002 all-out lo-fi album All Hail West Texas which went nicely with cooking bacon.

In Praise of Sunny Side Up Eggs and Rice

Okay, I know, the scrambled egg and hash browns and sausage and/or bacon combo is pretty nifty too especially the way the textures of the egg and the hash browns contrast and not to mention the careful balance between the two flavors. We all know this because everyone eats this for breakfast.

But one thing that’s totally neglected is the delicious rice/sunny side combo. Do you ever eat rice and sunny side up egg together? I don't think so. This combination is actually quite popular in China but they eat it for lunch.

The reason why this is so awesome is the rice (especially if it's a little dry) provides texture but you also get the egg to stand out in its yummy but delicate taste. To make it even better make sure to add some nice salt to the yolk while cooking so the flavor is enhanced. Then when you’re eating the dish break the yolk so it leaks all over the rice making for some super-delicious deliciousness. Yum yum!

Plus I bet you didn’t know that uncooked yolk digests better. That’s why poached eggs are so cool.

I wish I could eat this stuff every day.

Wrong. I consume white rice and two fried eggs every weekday (literally) and I've been doing so for over a month. I first had rice with fried eggs over a decade ago. It wasn't even my idea, mom did it for me.

I couldn't really fall back asleep so I whipped up a nice breakfast. It's pretty much the same as yesterday only I had bacon instead of sausages and then I fried the eggs in only bacon grease instead of a mixture of bacon grease and safflower oil. I used brown rice leftover from a very lame attempt at a ground beef and rice meal using a raw Angus burger patty.

I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the "black label" bacon is. It really is a godsend. I don't think I've ever made bacon better than this at home. I'm really hoping the bacon-with-a-free-carton-of-egg deal is still around so I can justify getting another fifty of these and then maybe open up an all-day-breakfast "soup kitchen" cooking scrambled, sunny side up, softboiled, shirred, whatever eggs for all the hungry and downtrodden while getting awesome tax benefits.

Maybe I should cook all of my breakfasts this way and start making all of my bacon in the oven in a shallow baking pan so all the grease floods the bottom.

Fuck the future and its cholesterol problems. This is now and food is good. Amen.

Went out to a local restaurant on the town waterfront (in so far as such a thing can be said to exist) which is in anold mill building, and had fried clam strips. They were very tasty...

I had me some turkey chili, wheat thins, and a glass of water earlier. Dessert was waffle cone ice cream.

Ate a pear. Figured it'd be more healthy than a bunch of sugary candy bars.

Should buy more of them.

This time, it was enough to satisfy my stomach.
