I feel like Mary Harron handled her film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel American Psycho rather poorly. To make the sort of statement Ellis was making she needed to be as extreme as he was in every way, highlighting the banality of yuppie culture, the gruesomeness of the attacks, the bleakness of his nihilism. Patrick Bateman is supposed to be suffering from boredom and fear and we don't see that happening. The talents the likes of Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch, Park Chan-wook, the Coen brothers or maybe even Gaspar NoΓ© (or maybe Paul Thomas Anderson, as There Will Be Blood has shown us) could have made a better film around the idea. I might even say Terrence Malick if Badlands proves anything but his work is also devoid of the pomo sarcasm of those other people.
American Psycho was not a great movie and the fact that it was "controversial" for its material is totally astonishing considering later in the decade we had films like Lars von Trier's Antichrist and let's definitely not forget Stanley Kubrick's image of sociopathy in his A Clockwork Orange three decades before. It's all been there, done that, and for a movie that concludes with a speech about how the movie is essentially saying nothing, there isn't really enough happening for us to care. (The Coen brothers' Burn After Reading comes to mind as a much better example.) ____________________ βSofi |
