I'm sold!

Google took its biggest leap yet onto Facebook’s turf on Tuesday, introducing a social networking service called the Google+ project — which happens to look very much like Facebook.

The service, which will initially be available only to a select group of Google users who will soon be able to invite others, will let people share and discuss status updates, photos and links.

But the Google+ project will be different from Facebook in one significant way, which Google hopes will be enough to convince people to use yet another social networking service. It is designed for sharing with small groups — like colleagues, college roommates or hiking friends — instead of with all of a user’s friends or the entire Web. It also offers group text messaging and video chat.

“In real life, we have walls and windows and I can speak to you knowing who’s in the room, but in the online world, you get to a ‘Share’ box and you share with the whole world,” said Bradley Horowitz, a vice president of product management at Google who is leading the company’s social efforts with Vic Gundotra, a senior vice president of engineering.

The debut of Google+ will test whether Google can overcome its past flops in social networking, like Buzz and Orkut, and deal with one of the most pressing challenges facing the company.

At stake is Google’s status as the most popular entry point to the Web. When people post on Facebook, which is mostly off-limits to search engines, Google loses valuable information that could benefit its Web search, advertising and other products.

I went to https://plus.google.com/up/start/?sw=1&type=st and saw the tour, it definitely seems easy to control your privacy, unlike some other website.

By separating friends into "circles," you can easily control what you share and with whom. I like.

I like this idea a lot, actually... but I doubt it'll catch on- Google hasn't had much luck with social, it seems, and the network effects around Facebook are pretty powerful...

So instead of having the option on facebook to only share my stuff with my friends I should instead use this service in which all my information will be used for comercial use? No, I'm sorry, that's stupid.

I'm not very into facebook even though I use it, but google is simply not a company I trust in this day and age, based on their past actions. :/

That's interesting; please elaborate on how Facebook doesn't do this and how Google will.

Yeah, I'm quite sure Facebook already sells everyone's data to whoever they please.

Assuming this isn't some bait-and-switch scam in which Google does the same privacy invasion, it may actually be worth investigating by me. I never touched facebook because I would much rather have control over these things rather than hand it out to everyone.

I'll be honest. I'd rather have one company have my information rather than two, regardless of whether or not they share that information.

I may still convert if Google can really take off with this concept/forces me to sign up with this concept in order to access YouTube.

Reminds me of how I had to tell Yahoo eighty thousand times not to share my info everywhere. Yeah... I'll probably wait too, no sense in putting my information up if it tanks.

Oh I'm sure facebook does, but at least they are not trying to convince me that that's one of the good points. :/

I mean, they all do these days. I just really don't like google. :<

Well, yeah, I always laughed when people used to believe they honestly believed in "Do no Evil", but to me anyway, Facebook is worse than them, just slightly.

Though it'd be nice if a non-evil corporation decided to make a social site instead.

I'm all for the controlling of privacy, but what's to stop Google from selling or mishandling our personal information? I mean, Facebook's done it plenty of times and has been called out for it, which doesn't exactly make me feel comfortable in the area of social networking as a whole. If one locale has been caught, how many others are?

...Though I guess I'm bringing in a new argument I'm not prepared to go defending, but...yeah. Anyway, moving on...

I have to say that personally, as far as corporations go, I prefer Google to Facebook...

Not that that's really saying very much at all...

Well, your argument is valid, and I hate Google for similar shenanigans, so I'm going to wait myself.

I'm not comfortable with social 'networking' myself, unless it's a purely professional job resume thing. Otherwise it's too many holes for data to be lost and bad things to happen.

Here's a very detailed summary of the features of Google+.

A poll held on the same website has found that 56% like it so far and want to try it, 33% would like to try it before judging, and 11% don't like it.

I'm looking forward to the day Facebook follows MySpace to hell.

I'm not terribly interested in either. They're both going to be annoying and retarded cesspools of drama by a bunch of bored teenagers(and adults who haven't matured beyond that) who purposely bring it upon themselves. I personally don't see Google+ overtaking facebook, though.

lol at anyone complaining about Facebook not being private. its not like Facebook has customizable privacy settings, the ability to create groups of people with whom you can share to, and the ability to block content to any or all users outside of a select circle or individual(s)....oh wait.

this doesn't do anything Facebook doesn't already do. but I guess if it catches on we'll all migrate to it eventually, just like we did from MySpace when Facebook became a thing. i just don't seeing happening as quickly if at all, is all.

I skimmed an article about it and my reaction was pretty much "wha?"

It sounds like basically Yet Another Attempt At A Facebook Clone #131072, doing all the exact same things but giving them different, equally meaningless names (what the hell is a spark?) and focusing on things Facebook has a bad reputation for (privacy) while not really offering anything new (and probably not doing it any better).

The main difference I see is this comes from Google, so it may have a chance just because it's Google where everyone already has an account (and they already have all your personal info ) and some people think Google is somehow more trustworthy than any other giant corporation. And it has a fancy drag and drop interface.

Still, not like Google hasn't tried to go social before and failed miserably.

Of course, it occurs to me that if this becomes popular and kills the face book Google will probably abandon even the pretense of "privacy" and go back to its usual "making information available" stance...

It also seems to be forcing a more mature audience. It continuously tells me that, even though I have an invite and all, I can't get in because I'm too young.

C'mon, google, have a heart. Not all of us 16-year-olds are meme-spouting CoD-addicted homophobic baggy-trouser-wearing slang-juggling morons.

Facebook started the same way, just so you know.

It was all college people, actually. You needed a college email address to get in.
