So a while back I posted about beating zelda on the NES for the first time... well, I just got done with zelda 2, the game I never thought I would play, even less finish! D:

I still stand by my opinion that the game suffer some quite fatal design flaws, but I must admit that the mid game was quite enjoyable, and I can now see why fans like the game so much.

It's a shame the game got so many things that are just too hard to figure out, if not for them and the (weird/bad) difficulty then this would have been one of the very best games on the NES. But hey, at least I found this more fun then metroid on the NES, so I guess that counts for something?

Yeah. Zelda II is fun, IMO, but some things about it are just maddening. Like how hard it is to restore life. I think it would have been nice if some enemies dropped hearts, like in Zelda I.

Also, falling costing a whole life may be typical of platformers, but it's so un-Zelda from a modern standpoint when most Zelda games only take off like 1 heart of damage for falls. And it makes for very frustrating experiences in Zelda II, which doesn't allow you to continue from the start of the dungeon like most other Zelda games, but you have to start all the way at the beginning of the game. And considering how hard it is just to get to most of the palaces... (Palace 6, I'm looking at you. I'd look even harder at Palace 7, but the game does have an exception for that and lets you respawn there when you die, thankfully.)

Then again, this was only the second Zelda game, and a lot of the standards of the series weren't yet established.

By the way, back in the early '90s it took my mom and I forever to find Hidden Kasuto, even with a guide.

I never did get anywhere in Zelda 2. It was just a land of death caves and unexplained dungeons to nowhere to me.

It helps to play a game without getting frustrated when you have an active rewind key (ergo what an NES emulator on DS provided me with).

I did try and take a potshot at this a few months ago over the Collector's Edition GC disc (old memory so could be wrong) and made it up to the graveyard somewhere before getting a G.Over, may or may not have lost nearly a full life bar on one enemy ()
That's the thing about this game for me, there are the enemies I can handle, then there's the ones I can't. would you like a boomerang

...Now that I think about it, I think I've bested every Zelda game thus far...sans Majora's Mask... (and the CD-i games of course what do you think) I should play that again sometime... (from the beginning, no reason to pick up a near-finished (maybe) file)

Play Majora's Mask. Do it right fucking now. Possibly my favorite Zelda game ever, even more than OoT.

Hey now hey now hey now do not get me wrong here I have played it throughput, at least beat two dungeons maybe three, the only thing really stopping me is shoddy GC controller quality. You know how those control sticks get old and drift you around in random directions? Well it got bad. Haven't touched anything with them in months.

...and then I am reminded I have that third-party looks-like-the-real-deal controller that I never even touched because who knows why...

Call back Sunday and I'll say how far I've gotten in it if I've gotten anywhere in it

I'd just grind a ton on the slime enemies, but that got boring really fast. Having to spend hours just to get into the next dungeon wasn't as appealing as my fancy mcschmancy new games.

Yeah, that's the problem with zelda 2, you need to grind a bit early game in order to not get owned, if not before level 2 then at least before death mountain. (Pffhahaha, have fun trying to beat it without life spell, which is what I did.)

The combat gets a lot more fun once you get the down stab, which is at the point where the game suddenly gets fun. Once you get past death mountain and such then things gets a lot easier and more enjoyable.

I find the items very lacking though. They are all pretty much used as mcguffin to get further into the game past points you could not go before. It's not that the combat is not enjoyable, but some sort of other weapon that you could get and use would be very nice. (Magic wand, bow, etc would work great!)

If I'd get to remake zelda 2 I would make enemies have a low chance of dropping hearts as well as having death mountain after level 3 was open, so you had the option of going there before level 3 or after. I'd also make it possible to level up past level 8.

And... it'd make the final level less confusing and more interesting. It had some fun and cool new stuff... but it was just tedius and not very fun to deal with them with the dungeon being as it was.

ATM I'm trying out some zelda 2 hacks to see if they are any fun/got better difficulty ramping.

I get the impression that most Zelda II hacks are just harder than the original, but maybe I'm not playing the right ones.

All the Zelda II hacks I've played are ridiculously hard. There are other reasons to hack a game other than making it really difficult, but most hackers don't seem to know that

So, like pretty much every other hack out there does?

I'd not mind it to be harder as long as it does not throw a death mountain at me.

IMO, Zelda II is already hard enough, but it has an interesting gameplay not found elsewhere in the Zelda series. I wouldn't mind playing more Zelda II-like games, but if anything, the hacks should be made easier than the original, not harder. Sacrilege, I know.

Zelda 2 is very hard, but once I had grinded up the levels needed to beat death mountain (keep in mind I did it without life spell as well.) I just blew past all the levels untill I reached the area around the final two levels. (Finding the hidden town? LOL HAMMER RANDOMLY AROUND.) As well as die as soon as entering the original town with my last life thinking I had made it.

Really, if anything, the game needs better curving. Which is why I have fait that hacks of this game can be harder but still be more fair then the original was.

So, like Zelda 1.

The difference being that, in Zelda 1, if you lost, you just started over from the beginning of the dungeon again, as opposed to starting over from the overworld again. (You could also buy life potions as often as your money allowed, without having them disappear forever when you get them once.)

Long story short, the "lives" mechanic of Zelda 2 is absolute bullshit.
