I remember that puzzle. Awesome.

(I'm guessing it was a Monday NYT puzzle since the election would have been Tuesday. That would explain the relative ease of it. I have seen late-week NYT puzzles in the paper here and recoil in fear.)

I read something about that puzzle.

I find crosswords rather amazing in themselves, fitting all those words together. But with tricks like that, they're even more amazing.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Nowadays (and possibly even then), one could write a program that, given certain criteria, even forcing specific words in to place, could build crossword puzzles.

I'd like to see one with a clue to the effect of "European island country" that can fit either ICELAND or IRELAND.

It must have taken a lot of experience in crossword puzzles to make that--and a wide vocabulary, of course.

Yep.

Crosswords tend to make much use of what's called "crosswordese"; i.e., words or names with all common letters, often starting and/or ending in vowels. ARIA, OLEO, EPEE, etc. It's an in-joke between my mom and me that crossword puzzles very often have one of Alan Alda's names in them.

At first I didn't look too hard and it said Clinton elected. So I though, oh, it can predict the future. Neat.

Then I saw it change to Bob Dole. I was like.... What? I had to look again

Yeeeaah, this is pretty amazing, considering how well it would have to be put together to work.

I'm sure it required a Thesaurus and a lot of wit to make.
