"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

Anyone remember this term from the beginning of the Internet?

Yeah, that was when 56k was state of the art and images took a long time to download. So people had to resize their images to small sizes like 150x150 (which wasn't bad when half the people used 640x480) to make them download in a reasonable amount of time.

Now, what annoys me, however, is when people even today upload their files in "web resolution". As you can guess, that is pathetic in modern times.

What bothers me more is "web-safe colors" and how some people (my web design teacher, ca. 2009) still suggest we adhere to them.

Honestly, how many people are still browsing the Internet on a 256-color display?

Nobody, more or less. All the old equipment has literally died at this rate.

I wonder what percentage of Internet users use dialup nowadays. I know I was on dialup long after most people had broadband (until 2005), and I got pissed off at people posting huge image macros everywhere because of it. I still have a strong aversion to image macros.

Image macros are stupid, more or less, but yeah, I've used 56k on and off sometimes and it really sucks these days.

56k is pretty much unusable today. It doesn't help that so many websites use Flash in one way or another.

I understand the desire to cater to people with slow connections, but at the same time, that only encourages ISPs to not bother rolling out broadband to some areas. :|

It's the same reason I don't agree with making websites IE6-compatible. You're only encouraging people to keep using a decade-old browser that's about as secure and stable as a wet cardboard box.

On the other hand, you can easily switch from IE6 to another browser. You cannot however easily switch from 56k to broadband, if there's simply nothing else available in your area.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I remember browsing acmlm's board 2 back in the day on dialup with no way to turn off post layouts that I could see, and I was also on a rather weak computer which literally chugged at just rendering the pages. That was around 2005.

While I don't think people need to cater to people with slow connections anymore, some websites are just sooooo bloated, just in their own source code. Some really bad sites I've seen could easily be over a MB in just HTML, CSS and Javascript when it could've been done in considerably less, or just had less retarded features that nobody needs or cares about and just adds to clutter. A lot of those kinds of sites likely just used some kind of site builder crap.

I last used dialup in 2006, and actually used an 800x600 resolution until 2007

I used Windows 95 until 2001, then Windows 98SE until 2006... 2000 for a few months before buying a new machine with XP

It wasn't until 2005 when I got a CD burner too (a USB 1.1 Iomega)... used it to back up my files on 3 CD-RWs (those were the days... now I need an external hard drive ;P)

I remember back in the first incarnation I had DSL, but still disabled layouts just because it slowed things down on my old computer. (Pentium 200Mhz 4 lyfe yo)
