Seriously. I checked out their schedule for today to see if they had any worthwhile stuff.

Turns out, they have three whole hours dedicated to Hitler alone.

And the other hours are conveniently filled with mindless Bible "studies" (if you can call it that) and 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Oh, how fun.

Yeah, or they fill it with programming that's barely educational, or just completely retarded (See: TLC).

Discovery channel is the only channel I have over here that I consider is worth watching at all. And even then, it's not really something I'm going to go out of my ways to watch.

Despite losing nearly all our cable channels for some bullshit digital cable conversion where we need to pay more a month and get a box for, we somehow still have Discovery Channel, TVGuide Channel, and C-Span.

Ironically, it is entirely possible to scan the old film into HD. Unlike old digital content, which will stay sub-HD forever without lossy enlargement.

However the sound portion is generally either missing or so low quality as to be unfixable, so it's kinda weird.

Analogue magnetic video also can't be enlarged. See: Star Trek The Next Generation. Might be able to get some more horizontal details out, but you're absolutely stuck at 480i.

Oh yeah, didn't think about that... it really says something about the technology when the only "truly HD" formats from pre-Digital HD era are those old films.

(Of course, framerate is still an issue, depending on the medium.)

Heh frame rate is still a bit of an issue. A lot of "cinema" is still done in 24 FPS. They'd probably get a lot of crap from filmfags about how more frames per second is somehow inferior if they did it any different. Honestly, 60FPS is probably as much as one would ever need, even though it's just some arbitrary number. 120 FPS would be the most anyone ever would need, but I've yet to see displays outside of older high end CRTs that can accept true high resolution 120 FPS signals. Monitors just don't usually cut it i n the picture quality or framerate department, and TVs are just a complete disaster if you want a proper 1:1, unprocessed, unfiltered image.

60 FPS is about the frame rate where the human eye can no longer differentiate between individual frames (for example, if you flash alternating black and white frames at 60 FPS or more, people would see it as a solid gray color), with the exception of especially fast moving objects, so it isn't really an arbitrary number.

Well, it's arbitrary because it's based on the electrical system and probably judged to be good enough when they designed the original televisions.

Hmm... But I can see most CRT monitors (not CRT TVs) flashing at 60 Hz, which would be equivalent to a 120 FPS video of alternating light and dark. Your example doesn't really make sense; it's true that 60 FPS is good enough for most video, but if you want alternating black and white to look gray to everybody, you'd probably need to go up to at least 150 FPS.

On the other hand, if there is very little change from one frame to another, you can get away with very low FPS. Lots of animation is done at 12 or even 8 FPS.
