Steam added a whole bunch of Free to Play games, and one in particular caught my eye...



It's a kind of dungeon crawler-type MMO thing with a limit of how much you can do at once (Energy, which can be purchased either with real money (uses Steam Wallet if you're playing through Steam), or in-game currency :smugdra: ), and dungeon crawling! DUNGEON CRAWLING!!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Playing on Steam will automatically add anyone on your steam friends list that is already playing the game to YOUR friend's list in Spiral Knights. Anyone who starts playing after this point will also be added. There does not seem to be a way to opt out of this functionality, however.
- You don't get a set allotment of energy per-day. You start off with 100 energy and will use this to do dungeon dives/revives (costs 2 energy for yourself/a teammate) and crafting. It slowly (and I do mean slowly) recharges itself. Although you the mist tanks you get will bump your energy back up to 100.
- There isn't a Jul guild yet. We should totally make one if we get a handful of people playing.

I had been looking into this game before but was sorta turned off since it seemed a bit repetitive, but playing with friends is always more fun, after all, friendship is magic!

I watched one of my friends play it, and... ehh... while I like the art style and designs of things, it doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. Too slow and repetitive for me.

I love the hell out of this game. It's like an MMO Zelda/Bomberman (yes, bomberman) with a steampunk/robotic setting and -amazing- music. I certainly root for a Jul guild. :x

Status after day 1:
- Used up the two mist tanks I got from steam event and reaching haven.
- Shield 2 star (crafted)
- Helmet 2 star (crafted)
- Armour 2 star (crafted)
- Bidding on 2 star bombs (1k bid.)
- Tons of crafting materials
- No cash outside the 1k used for the bidding.
- 7 Crystal energy left 0 mist.

Tomorrow I hope I can get a 2 star weapon so I can reach tier 2 dungeon levels and start making profits on buying crystal energy.

Some tips for you others:
- Gun is useless past the first one, don't buy another one.
- A good idea is to use the mist tanks as early as possible... but preferably after you got some crystal ENG and can start craft stuff. (to minimize lost energy.)
- Do a few dungeon runs, look over what materials you THEN buy recipes for crafting. (Vendor in town sell, so does the NPC between DL 4 and 5. (but not the same ones.))
- Do not bother with 1 star gear, neither recipes or buying it, it's not worth it. Go from starting gear to 2 stared.
- It may seem more profitable to buy 2 star gear rather then crafting since crafting costs ENG. But looking at the crown -> ENG ratios... that's far from the case. Crafting is the way too go, even if it is a bit trickier.
- There is a good wiki if you need information, I suggest reading up on energy at least.

So far the game is quite fun IMO... we will see how long it takes before I get bored.

Well I found my problem on why I kept freezing at 95% loading of the base camp.
Steam copy of the game comes with three .jar files, one already extracted. The other two, for whatever reason, did not extract, and only after manually extracting them did the game run. Bug? Maybe, could be the files were supposed to be dynamically extracted as they were needed. Did they do that? No.

Played a little more today, it seems like my computer just really hates the hub areas because when I was making the passage to Haven it wasn't too bad, though it was running at 85C. Though once I got to Haven my FPS dropped and I decided to quit before things went downhill. Again, it seems like it could be pretty fun, I just seemingly don't have any way to play it consistently with this shitty laptop.

Apparently, MSI didn't do the smart thing and turned off the overclocking on my graphics card after the first time my machine died. So, after doing it manually (I know, I should've checked) I got on and started playing.

Then ragequit because my dad was being an idiot and pissing me off.

Then, I got back into it again and had a lot of fun, barring a few idiots who didn't understand the concept of standing on the button to open the damn gate.

Definitely something I'm going to play over the next 3 months!

OK, I've tried the game.

In all honesty, the game does absolutely nothing to amaze or wow me right now except in the soundtrack, which I do enjoy. It's just got a real "run of the mill" feeling for me right now. I'll probably continue playing it with friends, but I don't see it as a game that gives me any feeling of wanting to do anything solo unless I have to level myself up outside of the game.

Just a heads-up that a good portion of the playerbase isn't that smart and will buy extremely common drops from the auction house for well more than the average sale price. Case in point, I made a few hundred crowns off red shards. :smugdra:

Logged in and found out my 3k OR 3.25k OR 3.75k offer to buy 100ENG went through, turned around on it and offered to sell it at 4.5k (even though current prices were well below that)

check again five to ten minutes later and it isn't there anymore

The ENG market is cruel.
