Okay...so I am attempting to run a 1998 PC game called Stunt Track Driver on my computer. I tried reinstalling it, and I cannot get any graphics to show. I can hear the soundtrack from the intro and menu, but I can also not click on any of the menu options (random clicking around on the screen confirmed this).
Help, please! I think all my drivers are up-to-date, and I'm not sure what's wrong. |

I'm running XP. Strangely, it worked until a couple years ago...I'll have to try the older-model computer in my basement and see if that works. |

| | | | | Old games can be finicky like that. Since it worked somewhat recently, it's very likely that a Windows or driver update broke it. Most companies aren't very good at (or even interested in) maintaining compatibility with old, forgotten software, hence the need for things like DOSbox and VMware.

Well, it works on the older computer, which had XP installed in 2002 or so and hasn't had very many updates recently, and doesn't work on this one, which had a system restore done in 2009.
The only computer I have with 98 is my laptop, which is pathetic for 3dfx stuff like...almost every non-platformer PC game from that era. I suppose I'll just be doing research on the older computer instead of the new one. |

I haven't used it in a while, but a lot of those old children's games used direct3d retained mode, because it was cheap and quick to throw something together with, which doesn't work in Windows anymore. You'd be hard-pressed to get it to work in much anything beyond windows 98 or 2000 in a VM, without 3D acceleration enabled, since wined3d doesn't do d3drm either.
EDIT: It might also have a Glide fallback mode, as metal man 88 mentioned.
I've used this one and it seems to work pretty well: http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/
Right, it's a Hot Wheels game. I've been exploring it along with three other games, Crash, Micro Racers, and STD2 (lol) because the game data is easy to access. So far, I've found one unused sprite sheet and one relatively well-known hidden/unfinished stage. Fun stuff. |
