...the plant's power is down?

Ever had one of those days where you can't go in and it's not because of you calling in because you're sick, playing sick, or skipping? I've got one now and I'm at the point where I'm kinda ticked. Sure it's great having the time off but I lose money and I just can't do that right now. :\

The kicker is that the power dropped out here so I missed my alarm so I got a phone call from my boss at 7 (time when I should've been at work) asking where I was...I'm going 'oh shit!' at the phone because a) haven't missed a day yet b) I'm late and c) it's the DAY OF my damned first 3-month evaluation. I'm thinking 'this has bad day written all over it'.

Then he tells me that and I'm going 'oh wow, really?'.

So it's good and bad and...good...and...bad. Honestly, I'm just waiting for a call that says I'm not going in so that I don't have to worry about much more than being broke to the point of having to tell my apartment manager that pay's coming in next week so hold my check.

I work at a car wash in northern Alberta, so yeah. If it's less than about -20°C they won't open. Occasionally because of mechanical failures too.

Like you said, it's kind of a mixed blessing. "Yay, I don't have to work... but boo, I won't make any money."

[edit] Shit, bad typo. Less than MINUS 20°C. Else I'd be out of a job.

Unless you are in managment or its a natural disaster, you won't get paid. I know a few years ago when we had the hurricanes, if you were set to work that day, you would get paid for that shift that you missed.

If I did that at work I wouldn't get paid AND I'd lose 20% of my bonus for the month.

The right thing to do would have been to go in late and either work later or just work as much of your shift as possible. Or get a battery-powered alarm clock.

Well I ended up going in that day with a grand total of seven other people.

...and ended up staying home today because I'm sicker than shit. Oh well, my pay was going to be crap anyways. I'll probably go in on Saturday at this rate.

There was a power outage at my company's workplace last summer. Power outage spread for a large area in SF. At the time, since I was a software programmer, not having power made it difficult to work. Sure we had laptops and stuff, but we depended on servers for getting work done. No network, no database, no work could be done.
