If you've ever played Sonic CD, you probably know about the two different soundtracks and how America got burned with a different soundtrack.

Well, I prefer the Japanese/European soundtrack due to its more urban flavor than the American one... and it actually sounds much better, at least in my opinion

With the wonders of modern emulation, however, you can create a hybridized disc with the American game and the Japanese soundtrack, or even mix American and Japanese tracks if you desire

I prefer the Japanese soundtrack myself as well... plus, it goes better with the past musics.

I prefer the J-Rock/J-Pop ambience of the Japanese version, even though the first one I heard was the American version.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefer the American version. I'm not really into J-pop at all and the past music in the American version were the only songs that did absolutely nothing for me. Later on I found out that they sounded so different from the rest of the game because they were from the original Japanese soundtrack. Then I got my hands on the original to give it a try since everyone said it was so much better, and I was like "oh goody, now the ENTIRE GAME sounds like my absolute least favorite tracks while all of my favorite tracks are gone".

In particular I like the American Collision Chaos Present song, and the American Stardust Speedway Bad Future, plus there are plenty of other catchy songs on there. Also, you gotta love Sonic Boom.

I do like the Japanese soundtrack too though when I'm in the mood for a different feel. The music does match the absolute crazy level design of some of the stages better. I just prefer a lot of tracks in the American version mainly because they are catchy and darker.

Edit: Just started listening to the Japanese soundtrack again. I might have to change my vote to mix. I think my music taste has changed since last I played this.

The J/E one has a feeling closer to Sonic Adventure music (well, it's the other way around, but I heard Adventure's music before this one so yeah), at least to my ears. That is a good thing.

Though Sonic Boom is the superior intro.

I've never taken the time to listen to both soundtracks and compare them, but I have done so with the intro songs.

I don't care what anybody says; the ending of You Can Do Anything is far superior to the entirety of Sonic Boom. (If only the rest of the song was that good...)

Sonic Boom is good, but the rest of the American soundtrack seems... too generic to me.

I prefer the Japanese/European track more than the American one. "You Can Do Anything"(or "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior") just sounds better than Sonic Boom, when I go to watch the clip when playing the game, that is. It just fits in with the blend of animation, I guess.

As for ending tracks, it was no way a tough decision to make. The Japanese ending was far better than the American one. America's ending theme was just a repeat (in a slower and lighter tune) of the opening track, while the Japanese one was a completely different one that sounded amazing.
That said , my vote goes to the Japanese/European opening/ending.

The American soundtrack since I haven't heard the other soundtracks.

Also, the boss music from the american soundtrack makes two scenes from the sound test and debug mode more scary.

Trivia: The Japanese boss music is actually a remix of this:

American version gets my vote specifically for Stardust Speedway and Wacky Workbench.

Ah, I always love this question. There was a time when I would have said I preferred the J/E soundtrack, but having listened to both again, some of the US tracks are really awesome (especially Wacky Workbench, Collision Chaos, and Stardust Speedway). They both have equally awesome special stage tracks too.

Yeah, it's a mix for me, maybe leaning a little towards J/E.
