Did that Carinsurancequotes bot have a valid email address, or was it actually exploiting something (hope not; I'm paranoid, though )? It seemed to get around to posting about as fast as the bots did before the new measures were implemented.

Captchas don't work if there is a human filling in the fields, as I suspect was the case with the last couple of spambots. The problem's only going to get worse as labor gets cheaper and spammers get more desperate.

I think the only way we're going to stop human spammers is via either manual validation (time-consuming, not 100% effective) or disabling registration entirely (not a viable option).

It's both sad and frustrating that sites keep having to resort to drastic measures like this to keep out friggin' spam...

Glad I signed up before this. I hate spambots, But Manual Activation has a tendency to freak out (not "freak out" per-say but things can get "ugly").

Well now it doesn't look like there's anyone human behind this. They probably just improved their features to get past all the anti-spam features.

E-mail validation is probably something that bots could be programmed to deal with- did anyone take a look at what the spambots were using for e-mail addresses before evaporating their accounts?

You know, we already do something similar to manual validation, in that spambot accounts are manually banned (usually) the same day they register, whether they've submitted something or not.

If we had a way to sort new, unvalidated users into a nice list that the admins could check on a regular basis, it would make the process a lot quicker and easier, and ensure that nobody gets ignored.

Yes, this might mean that new users have to wait a few hours to start submitting things, but I think it's a small price to pay to keep spammers from spreading their filth (and keep the Recent Changes page clean).

I think I'm gonna agree with BMF on this one. Most of the admins have had to prune the spamusers anyway, so manual validation wouldn't be that much of a step. I mean fuck, there's like eight or nine of us (me included), so I think with that many people admining it, it wouldn't take long for someone to jump in and do a spambot sweep.

Let me just say that I, for one, really dislike manual approval, and have no intentions of implementing it.

However, I will be looking into other methods of stopping the spam issue.

Didn't you do something on an old incarnation of the forums wherein there was a hidden field that auto-banned bots, that field being something they almost all would do upon sign-up? Perhaps that would work again.

It would function as a handy idiot check, too.

Two more registered today and were banned... the same garden variety FirstnameLastname# ones, though...

Too soon to say whether the other ones have fully been kicked though. They were kinda infrequent.

The Planescape Torment article should be featured, it's high quality and rich in content.
http://tcrf.net/Planescape:_Torment

This brings me to wanting a feature that allows users to nominate the articles.

Soo, what do we do with Nintendo DS title screens? At the moment it is a mess, with some pages using only the top screen and others using both. Which one should we use?

Sittin on the top screen kickin on the bottom screen gotta make my mind up wh-*shot*

Anyway, my personal preference is to use both screens- it does take up more vertical space on the page, but I don't think it's that much of an issue...

If the 'other screen' is little more than a separate screen with, say, a "Touch Here to Start!" message, I'd probably consider removing it, though.

Of course, that could bring up potential problems - don't Desmume and No$ take captures of both screens at the same time? - someone less experienced in graphic editing could possibly lower the quality of the image considerably while trying to crop out the lower screen, for example.

Of course, if a contributor cannot even crop a screen properly, what is he supposed to do here?

I don't think that should be an issue at all.
