So I'm sitting at home, doing some Biology revision (studying, for you other people ) and I receive a text from my mum.

"Help, I'm in trouble." The emergency signal from her phone. So, I drop EVERYTHING, grab my coat, shoes and keys and I'm out of the house in about 15 seconds. I RUN to the end of the street, down the cut and up to the college.

Then my mum rings me, telling me that something in her bag poked the emergency button.

Dammit, woman! Don't put it where it can be bloody poked!

This is why I like flip phones. Harder to hit a button by accident.

Reminds me of car alarms and how often it's very easy to accidentally set them off with the "PANIC" button.

It is a flip phone. A Doro, high-visibility phone. The emergency button takes up one quarter of the back

Ah.

Dumb place for it.

Is an emergency button a common feature on British phones? Because I've never seen a phone with one here.

Stupid question, but why is the emergency button in a position where it can easily be pressed in the bag?

It should require a button combination or something, so it can't just be triggered by accident.

It's a high visibility phone. My mum is partially sighted, so the phone makes sense. And I.suppose, in an emergency, you really don't want to mess with a key code. Although why they didn't put it on the inside is beyond me...

There's a nice and convenient button to press because when you're on the ground, writhing in pain from having a heart attack, the last thing that's on your mind is everything but, "Holy crap this shit hurts!" You can also activate it by flailing at the thing, making it just about failproof. The only downside? Accidental activation may occur.

I can see how this could be quite annoying. Though it might have been annoying, the fact that if your mom ever is in serious trouble, she can easily click it. That's the only logical reason for putting it on the back. Though, if it was hard to get to it within a second or two (as if it was inside the phone), then what's the point of having it in the first place?

This is why you should never put 911, 112, etc. in your speed dial because it could be accidentally triggered

(I've heard of people accidentally calling 911 because they put it in their speed dial...)

Who has 911 people in their contacts, let alone speed dial list?

Unless they were trying to indicate that person should be contacted in case of emergency.

For those people, I just put them as ICE

My parents. It's part of the reason I'm phobic of using a telephone now, I hit 911 on accident while trying to call my grandpa when I was 5... I got yelled at, was called an idiot, was grounded... Yeah, kinda turned me off from using a phone again.

Plus, a speed dial is mostly useful for storing numbers you can't remember and calling long numbers quickly (US numbers are 10 digits long). Are you really going to forget 911 (or 112, 999, etc.) or take a long time pushing all 3 buttons?

Or much of anything. The best part is how a lot of them are triggered by loud noises, too, so that asshole with the fart can on his car will end up setting every last one of them off.

Combine this with idiots who drive with those early in the morning for lots of fun!

That and the fact dialing 911 probably takes less button presses than accessing your speed dial and finding the number in there to begin with. I can understand maybe having some city/region specific extensions in there, but... 911? Hello?

I thought I replied to this.

Locally dialing just a 9 and then not continuing makes phones auto-dial 911 without it being in contacts. There were a number of times in which my original dino of a phone made emergency calls.

Though I guess now technically it's more like a ping.

Seems like your area's 911 system would get a hell of a lot of accidental calls then, dotUser.

That's the drawback of making it really easy to call 911. They get accidental calls, and I think they're required to send a police officer to 911 calls if you don't specifically say it was an accident. So if your phone is in your purse and something jostles in there pusing the 9 button and you don't know that your phone is calling 911...
