The big problem is that David wants it to work as a living.

For that you need tons of quantity.

they just never really bothered with tons of quality.

Quality > Quantity.

I don't know how good it is for Xkeeper, but one of the things I really like about this forum is that it is not cluttered with a ton of ads. I was about to join on Vizzed (good thing I didn't ), and one of the first things I noticed was that it had many, many ads all over the place. I almost expected it to start giving me pop-ups or something of the sort. They were all data-miners

Yeah. In order to make Vizzed make a profit, David put Google Ads everywhere. There's one in the header, one in the footer, two on each sides of your profile, and then a block-type one on your profile field.

Google ads kinda sucks.

We got ourselves Project Wonderful, which is superior in every way.

And some users willing to pretty much shower the site in donations.

What I've noticed about Project Wonderful is that the prices seem to be reasonable and the quality is higher. For Google, there are a lot of (in fact it's mostly made of) sketchy ads.

I just went on there and the ads were all about what I had just google searched (watches). It is quite disconcerting for the ads to know all that and to be data-mining based. Jul at least has ads that aren't data-mining and there's only one of them on the page. The Project Wonderful ads are less sketchy in terms of whether they'll give me viruses. I'm sure there's been people on that site who have gotten viruses from the ads

I've been in a few forums during my life and Acmlm -> Jul just sticks the best. I don't know why, but I really turn in-active on other boards than Jul.

Jesus, that forum is ugly XD

It looks like they've been doing some questionable things with the board software as well.

Also, this made me chuckle:

Late 2003: Someone hacks Vizzed Board and destroys all posts and members by uploading a PHP file using the upload feature and dropping the tables in the database.

You can use [quote], you know. It does the work for you. (And the XHTML-style tags aren't needed, either.)

As for Vizzed, I went to it years and years ago back when it was the only other Acmlmboard that wasn't blocked on the school internet, though over time it seems to have gotten increasingly ... bad.

I find it kind of funny that he's trying to make a living off of it, though. Good luck with that.

Look, a lil' floating box!
Jul's definitely my "main board", yup. Never went to Vizzed, but I find their idea of online emulators paid for by some kind of virtual currency odd-ish.

A lot of schools have pretty oversensitive Web filters. Most of them attempt to block all forums/chat sites, sites relating to games, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if they fell under one or the other.

At my school, you can't search breast cancer (because of porn) or Heart disease (because of Dating Sites).

I'm kinda used to schools having overprotective filters. It gets pretty annoying sometimes when it catches false positives while you're looking for material for your presentation.

Especially when you get threatening-looking messages like "This page has been blocked for: illegal content and your accessing of it will be reported."

Though eventually I realized that no one at the school was actually going to bother to look through the huge numbers of reports, and there was no reason to be worried...

I never use BBCode - I've used HTML formatting in posts since I learned how. I use the Quote feature for internal quotes, and yes, that's nice and easy. And yes, I did edit the post to add the horizontal rules - I am that anal

As for XHTML-style tag closing, although it's not required by HTML5, it is allowed and is still considered the absolute best practice. It's a force of habit.

Having said that, I did admire Acmlm's demonstration of how much he could condense HTML by consistently exploiting browser leniency.

Huh, I see. Most ports are blocked at my school, but internet is unfiltered sans facebook (completely).

Ports blocked at my college. ssh makes quick work of that, however.

I think my high school used a lot of user-level web filtering. There were some things filtered regardless of level, some things filtered only to teachers. Of course, booting Linux from a live USB probably gave it access to everything that wasn't globally filtered. Of course, I'm just guessing here... (Boy, this has come up a lot lately, hasn't it?)

I remember vaguely registering on Vizzed in 2004... have they ever wiped? I don't seem to be able to an account. I do remember when it wasn't bad, though... sites like that are why addons like AdBlock exist.
