Yep, it's me. And it's a FINAL? Shit, son.

(In all actuality everything's all done and I'm just whittling away the time until I get out here, where I will then eat my lunch, play some Pokemon and head off to my last final)

Actually, that would be me.

The girls to the right of me are talking about pee. The guy to the left of me is putting in his contact lenses. We're supposed to be working on a picture, but I've already finished it.

So, yeah.

Isn't that kinda the point of school computers? To do anything but school work?

Exactly.

Which is why all school computers are underpowered pieces of shit, so you can't do what you want to do.

This computer actually has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and 4 gigabytes of RAM, much better than my own computer.

Mine has twice as much HD space, though.

My old high school's computers cost half a million dollars. They were all underpowered Dell pieces of crap. The school also thought it was a great idea to buy Photoshop CS3 for every single one of them.

Needless to say, CS3 would barely run. Mr. Petit, the teacher in the actual computer lab, was laughing about the whole thing. He tried stopping whomever was in charge from overspending for the computers/software but they wouldn't listen to him. He got a really big head when all of the staff learned that he knew what he was talking about after all of the money was already spent!

What I did on the computers, you ask? Runescape, and on the computers in the computer lab, Unreal Tournament 2k4! Petit was awesome and actually let us play it if we finished our work for the day, and I was 4 weeks ahead of the rest of the class! :specialed:

Why, it is fun to run Windows 2000 on a PIII 800 MHz computer. Especially when you try to start Word XP and it lags endlessly and you can't really work with it.

The other computers were even worse off, they had Windows 95 still. I can only make guesses on how fast (or slow) they were.

The computers in the lab I had last semester were all from the mid-90's, but they weren't connected to the internet and they worked for the purposes of the lab, so I guess they didn't consider upgrading to be a major concern.

Since I got a laptop, I actually haven't used the school's computers for non-school purposes... much more convenient to use my own setup, after all.

You haven't used a school computer until you've booted another OS from USB on it.

The best part is, I didn't even feel the effects of how outdated they were with Damn Small Linux. Love how light that thing was.

The teachers didn't mind, either - I had a reputation for knowing what I was doing, especially after getting a printer to work. It was just annoying when I put headphones in and the sound "leaked" through anyway... what a way to get complained at. But these things were ancient Compaqs, presumably with a P3 or P4... (and 256MB of RAM).

However, my high school DID get some newer Dells... which, at the time, trumped my own machines. (Not anymore, of course...) Had to boot something else on them.

I mainly only booted even just to dodge some web filters - I often stayed in Windows and did some work on ALTTS, too. (But that I'd been doing since 2007... and ZC work in general on computers since 2005.)

...Yeah, my school computer usage is associated with some extremely fond memories.

I told you, those computers are for academic use only!

Part of my job at Seattle Central is making sure that people don't use the 3 computers in the tutoring lab for non-academic work. Mostly because, well, there are only 3, and other people might want to use them for doing their homework, and Seattle Central has a computer lab where you can do anything you want.

That wasn't, by any chance, some crappy Fujitsu-Siemens machine with a green-ish sliding cover in front of the drives? That's what we had to put up with in one room at the place where I had my vocational education. They got rid of them at some point during those 3 years, and - if one asked nicely - we were free to take one home, loot them, whatever. Got a few boards, HDDs and the like that way.

...wut. Why would the schools computer need to be so powerful?

Then again, my senior year, some of he computer labs got brand new Macs.

I remember my senior year of high school, the school bought a computer lab full of gleaming new iMacs- every other computer in the school ran Windows XP, of course, and they didn't do anything to replace those...

Is it just me, or do schools generally avoid Vista/7?

I have yet to see a school use any of those.

My college wiped Vista from the machines they bought to install XP.

...Though they're going 7 soon. That should be fun.

I had an Information and Communication Technology course (although it really should have been called "Microsoft Office for Dummies") in grade 11 and a group of friends and I would spend the first 15 minutes of class completing the assigned work and then have LAN matches in various games that we had on our USB keys for the remaining hour. The best part is that at the end of the semester I had a 99 in the course and ended up winning an award for having the highest mark .

Lol, at the moment this is being posted from a school computer. I own it of course. It's mine, but it's the one required for school. I normally do school work on here, but sometimes I don't because I tend to get quite distracted sometimes.

I think I'm being a little harsh here, and call me out if I am, but I just read a 1000+ post thread for the sake of protecting friends and such, and reading all that retard in said thread has me in a sour mood.

The teacher gave no shit. We showed our final animations, burned them to a disc, and that was it. 20-30 minutes. There was literally nothing else that could be done and I didn't want to spend the rest of my time I had to be in there derping out (and this medication really makes me sleepy when I'm derping out). 99.5% of the time I really AM using an academic computer for academia, with the remaining .5% being when I have absolutely nothing better to do or have no idea on how to start a project so I browse a little for inspiration. Zero. Zilch. No homework. Classwork is done. Shit, let's browse LJ and the forums for a few.

My school uses Win XP computers, which I'm ok with.

I'm guessing it's because Vista and 7 have a lot of personal features and are a lot more user based. The administrator would have to block soooo much stuff in order to make sure no one does anything that would change the computers.

What I find hilarious is that my school's admin blocked the Command Prompt from being used, yet he left all of the setup/config files in the root of the computers writable/deletable.

Gabu: Out of curiosity, what thread would that be? Not trying to push anything, just wondering a bit.
