We didn't really use any of it, either; even at peak (like when we were getting Reddit'ed and a bunch of other sites like Dorkly/Cracked/SPUF were linking to us), we were only using, at most, 1000 MB of RAM.

When it comes to web servers, that's no good.

As we're on BuildYourVPS, downgrading the RAM again to save costs wouldn't work; they've raised their prices a bit and we're actually getting a really good deal now compared to before. We also get 2 GB of dedicated RAM, more or less; the other 2 GB is "burst" RAM that we can use whenever, just not 100% of the time.

I've done a few things to help optimize our server, some of which were really high on my to-do list:

- FastCGI is now in use. Well, not FastCGI, but the offshoot of it that's more or less the same thing.
- SuPHP is no longer in use, as per above. SuPHP creates a new PHP process for each page view, which is really great when your server only gets about 100 views per hour. We kind of don't.
- Memcached is back on the wiki again. If it starts causing 10-second delays again I'll remove it, but hopefully it should work much better
- MySQL's cache values have been raised considerably:

InnoDB buffer pool: 768 MB (up from 256M)
Table cache: 256 (up from 128)
Query cache: 768 MB (up from 128M)

Hopefully, these tweaked values will let us utilize our allocated resources more efficiently; FastCGI alone should help quite a bit more!

As I'm writing this the server is putzing along at about 1900M of RAM usage, which is about where I wanted it to be; with MySQL and Apache both idle it's at about 1600M.

If you notice any large drops or other oddities with page loading, please let me know! If a page on the wiki takes a long time to load, consider looking at the source; there's a "Rendered in ______ secs" comment at the end of the page. Post the page you were looking at and the render time and I'll be able to look into it.

It's hard to quantify the change, but hopefully you guys (as users) will be able to report any issues you come across.

Getting a lot of timeouts now. Page-independent.

Anyone else?

It's back to the "loading sometimes, loading without CSS" routine from a while ago for me. Main page supposedly "Served in 0.300 secs." just now, yet it took nearly half a minute to get to a style-less page; recent changes supposedly "Served in 0.776 secs.", again took half a minute but this time got it with styles.

EDIT: Hurr, some hours later it appears to be working fine; pages are loading in less than a second, no missing CSS or anything.

The reason it may be taking longer than expected is that a lot of browsers will hang if they cannot load a stylesheet or javascript file; this was actually a fairly common issue back in the earlier days of Acmlmboard, leading to people being told to use @import instead of linking their stylesheets.

The issue earlier was due to a full server outage (if all else fails, check status.tocici.com; if that's not working, something else is very wrong).
