The prize for worst filesharing program goes to BearShare!

Features include:
Ultra-slow file sharing!
Pointlessly confusing EULA!
Spyware that installs spyware that installs spyware that...

Yeah.

Right now I'm trying to clean up a hideous mess of spyware, adware, and almost-trojans. ("Almost" because they were downloaded by the spyware.) All of them can be traced back to when BearShare was downloaded. The owner of the computer is a friend of mine, and he told me about how the computer was acting funny lately. I agreed to fix it, but he wasn't able to get it to me until today. Occasionally, the subject of computers would come up in our conversations and he would usually have something to say about his. "There's lots of pop-ups." "It runs pretty slow." No problem, I could fix that. I've done things like that before. "My brother downloaded BearShare." Huh? Wait, I'd heard of this before when another friend of mine downloaded it. He later tried to remove it, and resorted to reformatting the hard disk because it wouldn't work. "My brother removed BearShare." How did he accomplish that? "There's a lot more pop-ups, Internet Explorer won't load, and I can't change my background." I'd never heard the last one before, but didn't make the connection.

Now today. I run a virus check and get over a thousand results. Okay, nothing too bad with that. I boot the computer and get loads of error messages. Not too bad. Then I load up Spybot S&D and see "invalid floating point operation." What? "Malicious code has been injected." Okay, something is wrong here. Regardless, I start the scan. I watch the list fill up and notice one thing that stands out: "BearShare." I figure the details panel might say something, and it does. Bearshare downloads Zango. Zango downloads various adware and spyware, including one that locks the desktop to white. (edit: It's called Smitfraud-C.) Most of those download others, or allow someone else to download them.

Therefore, BearShare is the root of the problem.

Oh, and then Spybot started giving "out of memory" errors.

Time to see if its fixed.

I think it works again, surprisingly. Hours of virus removals, 2 spybot scans, and Google-aided registry editing was all it took.

All I have left to do is reinstall McAfee (because the viruses killed it) and fix some minor annoyances. But now, sleep.

I've never had any problems with bittorent clients. Although I can't say I've used many different ones.

I just use FlashGet 1.8.0.1002 for everything. Download manager and Bittorrent client. Can't go wrong.

So much for "working."

Something latched onto a system process, and I'm pretty sure reformatting the computer is easier than removing it.

Stupid Virtumonde.

I used to use BearShare alot. I used to like it because it didn't have any spyware at one time and I felt it was better then Kazaa and Limewire. Nowadays they are all the same, but so many people use Limewire that it hurts. I tell them "I use torrents" and they say "I have never heard of that program". I mean sure, they wouldn't know to begin with, but I wouldn't instantly assume it's a program! At least respond with something semi-intelligent like "Oh? What is that?". People seem to avoid computer conversation by any means, whether it is by agreeing with something or stating that they have used it before, at least they do it with me. They seem to not want to discuss things with someone more savvy in the field then they are. It's unfortunate however, as I myself will listen and comment on things like cars and soldering and such, things I don't know much about, the former being something I have near zero knowledge of.

My dad still asks now and then why I don't have BearShare, but he has grown accustomed to how much "better" and "safer" torrents are. At least he understands (After some thorough explanation several times) that torrents are a tracker file and that many programs can run it. He's not very bright with computers, but at least he listens to me It's things like this thought that make me proud to know what I know, but it also tends to contribute to my lack of good conversations with non-techs.

Using McAfee to prevent/remove viruses is like using a spear to fish. It might work, but there are much better alternatives.

This would be why I use:

A) Torrents + Peergaurdian2

B) Limewire Pro + Peergaurdian2

Peergaurdian2 is up mostly because well... It's easier to explain it with that old proverb.

"It's dangerous to go alone. Take this."

Fixing that computer was rather... educational? Well, now I know Ad-Aware can kill Virtumonde, so I'm happy.

And I got Ramuné for my work! That stuff is good but at the same time.

True, but it immediately removed infected programs when I opened the folder they were in. That must count for something.

Personally, I've never had any problems with good P2P crap (save for KazCRAP). Limewire worked out pretty well, provided that I got a peer. BitTornado/torrents work out greatly most of the time, however.

Sorry to be a little off-topic here.. but Ad-Aware doesn't work for all variants of Virtumonde/Vundo. It didn't work for mine, I had to reformat.
