So I downloaded several gigabytes of some TV show I wanted to watch and didn't realize all of it was in RMVB format ... To my horror. I do not have Real Media Player and I would really rather not install it.
I've tried two things so far with no luck:
*Download and install Real Alternative (I restarted and nothing)
*Download some dll files that I read were related to this and placed them on the System folder (they were: cook.dll, drv33260.dll, drv43260.dll, pncrt.dll, sipr3260.dll)
The error I get when I try to open the file is:
"The following pins failed to find a connectable filter
---file name: Output 00 (Audio Stream)
---file name: Output 01 (Video Steam)
RealMedia Splitter :: Output 00 (AS)
RealMedia Splitter :: Output 01 (VS)
The info I get for Output 01 for example, is:
C:\Users\---\Desktop\13.生日派对.rmvb::Output 01 (Video Stream)

I guess there's no choice then ._.
I installed it and it worked, so thanks.

Are you using Media Player Classic, or Media Player Classic HomeCinema? I had no problems playing RMVBs on MPCHC, the one time I had to do it, with Real Alternative installed.
Of course, I keep MPCHC up-to-date with the latest beta, though, and yes, I do keep VLC updated, too.

I do have Home Cinema (v1.3.1249.0 64 bit), actually. I don't like VLC ... it keeps crashing, and seeking is so slow. Although, it did manage to play the files. |

My WMP with K-lite Codec Pack installed and I associated just about every file type with it. It plays RMVB just fine, though I know quite a few people who loathe the non-classic WMP. Having 1GB of video memory seems to have gotten rid of all the problems I used to have with it on my old PC.

The 64-bit version? Ah, that might be part of the problem. Keep in mind that 32-bit players can only see/access 32-bit codecs, and 64-bit players can only see/access 64-bit codecs. The Real codecs (and therefore Real Alternative) are only 32-bit, I believe.
You can install and use the 32-bit version of MPCHC (and other codecs, like the latest ffdshow) alongside the 64-bit versions, though. That's what I do, although I still tend to use the 32-bit version more.
It might also help to keep an eye on this page for the latest MPCHC betas and stable versions; I don't know where the betas are originally being posted, but last I checked, they weren't being posted to the Sourceforge page. Beta v1.5.2.3114 was just posted for direct download from that page.

Aren't the ffdshow implementations of the Real codecs still somewhat work-in-progress, like VLC's? (And, I think they don't support all of the possible Real codecs... I'm not at a system with ffdshow installed (Linux) at the moment, so I can't check the list. ) I haven't had a reason to work with the Real codecs in quite a while, so I haven't checked to see how well they're supported by either ffdshow or VLC, so I could very well be wrong.
By all means, try the ffdshow method as well. I always keep both 32 and 64-bit versions of MPCHC and ffdshow installed on my 64-bit setup.

Sorry, it's a bad habit of mine. I frequent VideoHelp, where we tend to refer to ffdshow-tryouts as 'ffdshow,' alone. That works better there, though, as the forum software autolinks the word 'ffdshow' to the Tools page, and the latest tryouts build (well, usually clsid's builds, anyway) is posted as a direct link near the top.
