So, I've decided to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop to something that doesn't use GNOME. Transitional choices are (x/k)ubuntu 11.04.

My question is: Are there many differences between wireless managers? I remember Kubuntu 9.04 giving me some problems, but would certain managers pick up connections others wouldn't? I have better wireless under GNOME's network manager as it is, but I'm not sure if alternatives (like Wicd/whatever KDE's is) would work quite as well. I know I can't get some wireless connections I can under Ubuntu on Windows, however...

Paulguy's Post configuration
The wireless managers tend to just be a frontend to wireless-tools and/or wpa_supplicant. Inconsistency could be related to the managers having different thresholds for filtering out results considered too "weak".

Also, sometimes the drivers in linux might have some difference that make them work worse or better than their Windows versions.

A few years ago, I could use GNOME's network manager to connect to networks, but KDE's didn't work. It was probably because of the sketchy driver support my chip had at the time, though.

Hopefully things have improved since then. It probably depends mostly on the drivers.
