So... looks like I'm going to be running BitTorrent non-stop for the next six months. I trust you can figure it out from there.

Was your hard drive a Western Digital? A LONG time ago when my Hard Drive fried, Western Digital Lifegaurd Tools saved my ass. Heck, even if it's not, try it anyway since the drive is practically lost anyhow. I had the same problem with Bios not being able to detect it, but I didn't have any clicks or whirrs.

It's a Seagate. A friend of mine is going to attempt to get it working, though how successful he'll be, I don't know. I don't expect him to have any success, but I'll give these a try when he's finished messing with the drive...

Would Western Digital tools work on a Seagate though? They may use different proprietary commands that may not work on other brands

Not that it matters. If it doesn't work, the data is gone. If you don't try, the data is gone as well.

I've heard that it's possible to repair a broken HD by replacing the broken part with a working one from another HD... apparently a delicate process, but... has anyone tried this and/or had success with it...? It's about all I have left. Even a small amount of hope that all my data isn't gone forever is better than none at all...

Well it depends on what part is broken. Some cannot be easily replaced.

Opening a HD is a very delicate process. Watch what you're doing, and try not to damage the magnet discs.

Well, I'm getting the standard "click of death"... I don't entirely know what it entails.

Paulguy's Post configuration
You need a clean room to open a hard disk in without completely screwing it up.

This and the slightest dust particle will just re-break it if you take it apart and reassemble the platters inside a new drive (which is what it requires to work.)

First off, don't open up the drive.

Secondly, that clicking usually indicates either a bad controller board (which I would guess is more likely to fail without warning) or bad heads (which steadily deteriorate). The fact that it refuses to identify itself to the BIOS could be a controller board problem, which is a fairly simple fix if you have a suitable replacement controller board. Finding a suitable replacement could be as simple as finding another drive of the same model, or as difficult as finding a drive with a certain serial number (or as impossible as finding a drive with the correct calibration values burned into its firmware ROM). Other than replacing the controller board, it's possible to take a set of heads from a donor drive or move the platters into a donor. Obviously these two options require opening the drive, which you should never do. However, if you go for professional recovery, it would be a good idea to ask if they use all three of these recovery strategies.

Finally, don't open up the drive.
