Lavacopter went to great trouble to gather all the prerelease screenshots and trailers available for Ocarina of Time. In this series, I've done my best to add commentary to note the changes that took place during the game's development. Hopefully it will serve as a good resource now that Zelda's Secret Ocarina no longer exists. If I've missed mentioning anything or you have your own comments to add, please let me know. =)

This is interesting; been a while since it's all been collected in one spot. Thank you for providing translations of the text, as well XD =)

(Give kudos to your friend, as well XD ^^)

ETA: Looking at the 98 stuff, video 1 at :18 seconds in... what is the weird white-blue thing in the upperleft corner, in the Kakariko shot? XD; Is it the dog lady, or what?

This thing, you mean? That's a very good question and I haven't the foggiest. My first guess was going to be Shikashi, but on second glance it doesn't look like him at all (or even a person, for that matter).

Zeth: Also your lonely...I mean low res model of the girl you posted I have a pic of too. She was shown in a pretty rare trailer I have along with the beta trees.

Awesome find, xdan.

By the way, has anyone determined the date of the untextured zora model? I know it was said to be one of the oldest, but is it from the same time as the other ones that were found? Is there even a way to determine the dates?

It might be feasible to check and see what bones it uses; might not be entirely accurate (they could have rerigged it later), but it'd give a good idea.

Thanks xdaniel, btw. That looks like it.

(The Zora uses 26 limbs, inline with a lot of the older NPCs, like the Beta Saria model, Beta Fado, and object_human, amongst other alpha NPCs, like blue dress lady above. I have UoT open XD)

It's not as impressive as those models, but look what I found while mapping Dodongo's Cavern!

Left: Old texture!
Right: Final texture.
Below: Old texture in action!

Turns out, when they were changing the textures to the final versions, they missed one little insignificant square above a door in one of the optional side rooms. The texture is stretched beyond recognition, anyway, so it's not like you'd notice anyway.

That's really cool, Peardian! Do you have a screenshot of the room in question?

Here it is! And I was a bit wrong about which room it was. It's only optional if you consider the Compass optional. According to the flow of the dungeon, it's the ninth room you enter. (Tenth if you count the pre-room before the big chamber as a separate room.)

I hate to ask a silly question, but where exactly is the texture in that screenshot? Is it on the right edge of the door frame?

These are sort of unrelated to the topic of the thread, but I netted the following shots from pages at Nintendo Japan's site.

I don't think this is any different from the final version.

Different magic meter here, and any other differences you can spot.

I was told in the past that this was different from the final version. Can't remember why.

The icons for rupees, bombs, and arrows are next to the number instead of above them like in the final version. Heart containers are in rows of 8 instead of 10, and a key count shows up in the overworld (in the final game, it only appears in the dungeons). Also, the word LIFE is surrounded by dashes in the final game, not the plus signs here.

I like that magic meter design. It looks like a bottle.

Another thing I noticed, in picture 3, that must be a *very* early Lamp design. And the passageway is a level one, instead of a staircase leading down.

Also, are there really green archers that walk around? I know that blue ones walk around in the final, but I think green archers just hide in the grass.

Oh, right. It's the top of the door frame, in the center of the picture. The only clue that it is the unused texture is the presence of redness.

Oh, I see. You have an incredibly good eye, then! o_-

Thanks for the other shots, xdaniel. I've seen that early lantern in other pictures (I think on Nintendo Japan), but I wasn't able to find it again this time. Would it be at all possible for me to preserve those screenshots on my website in a future A Link to the Past prerelease collection?

For anyone looking for more A Link to the Past screenshots, this scanned Nintendo Power with a Link's Awakening informational section and walkthrough that I believe came out before the game's release might be a good place to check. Unfortunately, they've cut the interface out of many of the screenshots to reduce their size, which is the only thing I've been able to use to identify beta content, not being that familiar with the game.

I was kinda hoping you'd do something like that, so sure, go ahead! Also would be nice to get a tiny mention there regarding those three screenshots, considering I actually scanned them in and stuff

And regarding the poster I got them from, although I think those ALttP shots are the only prototype ones on there - which is interesting in itself, because there's a final screenshot on the back of the actual SNES' box! -, would anyone want a photo of it or the other games featured (F-Zero, Super Tennis, Super Soccer, Super R-Type, SimCity)?

Of course, I'd be happy to mention you and link to your website (I presume that's the homepage listed on your profile here)! Yes, I'd like to see the full poster. Sounds cool!

No chance anyone else has leads on prerelease ALttP shots, by the way? Actually, I'm in the middle of translating an ALttP developer interview where they talk about the game's creation, so the screenshots might make a nice companion for it.

If you guys are interested in visual differences for the finished game, the font used for the "Hylian"-language in the Japanese version of A Link to the Past have designs of a vulture and an ankh. These designs were based on Egyptian hieroglyphs which carry religious meanings, and were altered in the English version. I'll try to find a screenshot of it. Really looking forward to your translated developer interview, GlitterBerri.

Well that doesn't surprise me, what with Nintendo's anti-religion policy and all. Screenshots would be really nice.
